May 16: Concert and Cello Master Class Sponsored by TJ

On May 16, there will be a concert sponsored by Temple Jacob with support from L'Dor v'Dor and the Jewish Women¹s Foundation of Metropolitan

The Cello and Piano Music of Richard Stohr (1874-1967) will be performed 
by Stefan Koch, cello and Robert Conway, piano at the Calumet Theatre on Monday May 16 at 7:30 pm. They will perform Four Fantasy Pieces, Opus 17 (1907) and Sonata for Piano and Cello, Opus 49 (1915) along with a power point presentation about the life of Richard Stohr.

Richard Stöhr (1874­-1967) was a prolific and highly respected Viennese composer, author and teacher. His output includes seven symphonies, two
operas, choral music, lieder, numerous chamber works and solo piano music, as well as half a dozen widely used textbooks. During his 50-year career as a teacher, his students included Herbert von Karajan, Erich Leinsdorf, Rudolf Serkin, Samuel Barber, Leonard Bernstein and Marlene Dietrich.

After he was forced to leave Austria by the Nazis, he continued his composing and teaching career in the United States, but his later compositions went unpublished and have been rarely performed.

Stefan Koch is a native of York, PA and received his musical training at
Temple University in Philadelphia, He has a Master¹s Degree in Philosophy
from the University of Michigan. Mr. Koch is a member of the Lansing
Symphony and is a frequent performer with the Kalamazoo Symphony, West
Michigan Symphony, Toledo Symphony, Michigan Opera Theatre and Grand Rapids
Symphony. In 2004, 2006 and 2007 he toured the U.S. and Canada with the Carl
Rosa Opera Company (London, UK), and since 2007 has been spending his
summers at the Utah Festival Opera in Logan, Utah. He has performed with
Sarah Brightman, Anne Murray, Barbara Cook, Dionne Warwick and Burt
Bacharach, Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme, Garrison Keillor, Dave Brubeck,
The Boys Choir of Harlem, Mannheim Steamroller, Bernadette Peters, Amy
Grant, the Von Trapp Family, Doc Severinsen, Earth Wind & Fire, and Julius Erving.

Robert Conway is an associate professor of piano and music history at Wayne
State University, where he is also the director of the piano area. Since
1989, he has performed regularly as orchestral keyboardist with the Detroit
Symphony Orchestra and has been a soloist with them on several occasions. He
has been an Artistic Ambassador of the United States Information Agency on a
tour of South Asia and the Middle East in 1997, and a Department of State
Cultural Envoy to Jamaica in 2005 and Azerbaijan in 2008. As a soloist and
chamber musician, he has appeared at numerous national and international
festivals, performed concertos with many orchestras, collaborated with
prestigious composers, given countless premieres and is featured on several
recordings on a variety of labels. Conway received a bachelor¹s degree in
piano performance from the New England Conservatory and master¹s and
doctoral degrees in piano performance from the University of Michigan.
