Gardening Sunday (7/1)

posted Jun 29, 2018, 3:50 PM by Temple Jacob

Please join us as we continue our post-storm clean-up at Temple Jacob, especially the yard, on Sunday (7/1). We'll plan for 10-12:30. Please bring supplies (gloves, rakes, other gardening tools) and a snack to share.

Then, some members of the community will be helping to clear the grounds of the Calumet Jewish Cemetery. They'll meet 1-3pm with a carpool in the parking lot behind the Scott Building at 12:30.

Also, some TJ-ers will be participating in the community march about immigration Saturday (6/30) at 3pm. They are planning to meet at the old railroad station on the west side of the bridge, march across and then back. For more information about this event (or the Calumet Cemetery), please contact Susan.

I hope your lives are getting back to normal after these massive clean-up efforts in our community! And please let us know if you need any help!

A Post-Flood Message from TJ President (6/21)

posted Jun 21, 2018, 12:38 PM by Temple Jacob

From our TJ President:

"Local community, I hope you're all faring well after this historic flood. I've checked in with some of you and heard through the grapevine about others, but if you're in need of help with recuperation, please reach out to us: I know a lot of us would be happy to help.

Our 104-year-old temple came through the flood well! The building seems unaffected. There's some wash-out in the yard, which you may have seen driving by, which we can address in a garden work-day. We had originally planned to schedule one in June, but we want to prioritize everyone's home repair, so let's do the first Sunday in July.

So, July 1, we'll plan to have a garden work-day at the temple. We'll start at 10; feel free to bring a snack to share. Then, if you are interested in touring the Calumet Jewish Cemetery and/or helping to clear the grounds (gloves, rakes, saws,) and meet about future plans, please join us on Sunday 1 July from 1 - 3 pm. Meet to carpool in the parking lot behind the Scott Building at 12:30. Questions? contact Susan 906 482 3270.

In case you haven't seen the larger community resources, if you've sustained damage to your home, please report it by calling 211: even if you don't need assistance, a record of the extent of the damage will help direct resources to the community. The same number can be used to request help (I heard that there are lots of volunteers looking for projects). And you can also use the same number (211) to register as a volunteer!

The speed and extent of the damage were initially shocking, but the community response has been amazing. In some cases, the work of re-building may take some time, and I know we'll be here for each other as a Jewish community within the larger Copper Country community."
