Our Congregation was originally formed as Agudas Achim B'nai Moshe, founded in 1901 in LaSalle, Illinois. We were formally organized under that name on October 8, 1911. Until 1925, congregants would meet in homes and storefronts in LaSalle to worship and socialize, to read Torah and study the writings of our ancestors.
Our Temple building was built in 1924, dedicated on September 28 of that year, and remains in use today. In past years our numbers supported a full-time Rabbi who resided in the parsonage to the rear of the Temple.
Until the 1980's we had an active Sunday School and offered Bar/Bat Mitzvah classes, sponsored an active youth group, and, for adults, enjoyed the activities of active Sisterhood/Hadassah, B'nai B'rith Men's Club, and occasional social events, programs, and, of course, mahjong and card parties.
Over the years and over the hurdles of assimilated lifestyles and the draw of larger communities for younger generations, the number of congregants has devolved. Though weakening our numbers, this demographic shift has strengthened the need for a central presence of our Jewish identity and place to gather, socialize, worship and learn.
Families with Sunday-School age children now travel to Rockford, Bloomington, Peoria and Joliet for religious school and Bar/Bat Mitzvah preparation; we no longer have a full time Rabbi; and the parsonage had been converted to rental property with limited success in keeping tenants, and was finally surveyed off and sold.
For many years, Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati provided student Rabbi's for one-to-two years, on a bi-weekly or tri-weekly basis, for which we paid travel, expenses and a stipend. When HUC advised that they no longer could do so due to declining enrollment, we hired a Rabbi for High Holidays, and another to visit once a month to lead us in learning and worship. At present we have one Rabbi covering both High Holidays and monthly visits, also available for life cycle events.
Although the Temple is not "staffed" we maintain a telephone line and voicemail so that we will be able to respond to those who may call us.
We are affiliated with the URJ, Union of Reform Judaism.
