Tej Kohli Foundation lends a helping hand to the blind in India

Corneal blindness is one of the most common causes of blindness in India. India is home to largest number of corneal blind patients in the world, about 3.5 million across the country. Over 25,000 get affected on an annual basis. The patient line up and the wait to get a corneal transplant keeps getting longer every day. Cost of the surgical transplant in addition to unavailability makes it practically impossible for Indians living below the poverty line to be able to ever see again! Creating awareness amongst the masses to sign-up for corneal donation, therefore, is of paramount importance.
Tej Kohli Foundation, in the beginning of the year 2010 envisioned a goal to help deprived people suffering from corneal blindness. A goal that would give these people the greatest gift of all- vision. Recently, Tej Kohli Foundation joined hands with an NGO called Niramaya Charitable Trust. This Trust is registered in Gurgaon, National Capital Region of Delhi in India.  This NGO has a similar vision and also a belief that charity begins at home! The NGO is equipped with an eye hospital and an eye bank. The resident doctors and directors of the hospital are active members of the said NGO and more importantly Dr. Hitendra Ahooja who is playing an important role in all this, is a highly skilled corneal transplant surgeon. Tej Kohli Foundation could not have found a better set of hands to help with this noble cause.

Tej Kohli Foundation took the first step by donating towards the full cost of the surgical procedure that happened on June 20, 2010. The Foundation spent some time with the patient, Mr. Kamruddin, a resident of Trilokpuri in the state of Rajasthan. This 60 year old lost vision in both eyes about 10 years ago. A large family to sustain without any means of income made things very difficult for this household. Once Kamruddin was operated, we went back to talk with him again. He could see and we caught all his happy emotions on the camera including his tears of joy! He just received the ultimate gift he could ever ask for. And a poignant moment for Tej Kohli Foundation. Together with Niramaya Charitable Trust, we want to live such moments over and over again. This is just the beginning, the Foundation is committed to helping this NGO by funding all corneal transplants hereafter. The Foundation is also in talks with other such NGOs in other parts of the country so we can cover bigger ground in lesser time.

Tej Kohli Foundation is not only poised to helping out on the cost and related issues of the corneal transplant, but also and more importantly on creating awareness on a vast scale.
