"Design is the creation of a plan or convention for the construction of an object or a system" (Wikipedia, 2016, para.1).
"Designing often necessitates considering the aesthetic, functional, economic and sociopolitical dimensions of both the design object and design process. It may involve considerable research, thought, modeling, interactive adjustment, and re-design. Meanwhile, diverse kinds of objects may be designed, including clothing, graphical user interfaces, skyscrapers, corporate identities, business processes and even methods of designing" (Wikipedia, 2016, para.2).

Basic design tips

No matter what you are designing (web page, PowerPoint presentation, video etc.) following a few basic graphic design guidelines will help you design a more professional looking finished product.

  • Provide a clear navigation menu that is accessible from every page on your site (Entheos. n.d.)
  • "...headers convey the structure of your content, helping readers understand how your content is organized" (Lane, 2014, point 3)

  • Chunk information into short paragraphs (approx. 5-6 lines) with space between each paragraph and other media to make the text easier to scan and read (Lonoff Schiff, 2013, point 3).
  • "Limit the number of different fonts. ...2 or possibly 3 standard font families is easier to read and looks more professional" (Kymin, 2016, Fonts, point 9)
  • Do not underline text that is not a link as "It is a standard convention that blue underlined text represents a hyperlink that can be clicked" (Wong, 2011-2016).
  • Use consistent colours that contrast and complement each other (Pack, 2014). "Using contrasting colours for the text and background will make reading easier on the eye" (Woods, 2014, point 4).
