34. Complex Assessment

Abstract: Complex assessments are often considered “alternatives” to traditional paper and pencil examinations. Complex applications of knowledge and skills applied to authentic, real-world situations invariably result in the need for complex assessment instruments. In this chapter we address lab practicals, non-traditional forms of homework, student work portfolios, and other “complex” aspects of student work. Rubrics are introduced as a suitable means for scoring complex tasks.
