29. Legal, Safe, and Ethical Teaching

Abstract: Teachers bear a heavy responsibility of helping students to develop on intellectual, social, and emotional levels while, at the same time, providing for their physical and emotional safety. As a result, all teachers should be aware of the legalities associated with their profession, including rights and limitations. Safety stands at the forefront of teacher responsibilities, especially with respect to student work in laboratory or field settings that pose an increased amount of risk. Lastly, teachers must have a well-founded set of ethical standards to guide their professional conduct in and out of the classroom.
