Essential Questions

What would happen if tigers were let loose into the grassland of South Dakota?

  • biotic factor - the living or once-living organisms within an ecosystem (e.g. plants, animals, fungi, protist, bacteria, etc.)
  • abiotic factor - the non-living components of an ecosystem (e.g. air, water, soil, sunlight, temperature, climate, etc.)
  • interactions - when organisms affect other organisms
  • commensalism - a symbiotic relationship in which one organism benefits and the other is not affected
  • niche - the role an organism has in its environment-how it obtains food and shelter, finds a mate, cares for its young, and avoids danger
  • parasitism - a symbiotic relationship in which one organism benefits but the other is harmed
  • mutualism - a symbiotic relationship in which both species benefit
  • symbiosis - close relationships between species
  • respiration - process by which producers and consumers release stored energy from food molecules
