Welcome - Hiker Information !

Serving the Greater Binghamton, NY area since 1947

The Triple Cities Hiking Club (TCHC)
features a year-round schedule
of hikes and events
for all levels of abilities and interests

It is recommended that new hikers contact the hiker leader (listed in the hike description in the schedule)
if you have questions about the hike or to determine if the hike is "right" for you.

While membership in the Club is encouraged, it is not required to come along on a hike.
Please join us anytime you would like.

    - HIKING LITES
PhotoThese are our shortest and easiest hikes (1 to 2 hours), they are usually held on Saturday afternoons. Children accompanied by parents or guardians are also welcome.

One should bring a small day pack to carry a quart (liter) of water, a snack, rain coat, and other clothing depending on the season.  Bug / tick repellent is also recommended.

(Hiking Lite at Satterlee Creek, Sayre, NY)

    - SUNDAY AFTERNOONS

PhotoThese hikes are typically 2 1/2 to 3 hours (i.e. 4 to 6 miles) and are generally considered moderate. Faster and longer than a Hiking Lite, these hikes will almost always involve climbing hills, some of which will be steep. While these hikes are usually on trails, there may be uneven or rocky footing.  However, we find that most people are able to start out with these types of hikes. Typical Sunday afternoon hikes include visits to local county and state parks, various state forests, and nearby sections of the Finger Lakes Trail (FLT). Children accompanied by parents or guardians are also welcome.

One should bring a small day pack to carry a quart (liter) of water, a snack, rain coat, and other clothing depending on the season.

Bug / tick repellent is also recommended.

(Sunday Afternoon hike at Salt Springs State Park, Montrose, Pa)

    - SATURDAY HIKES
Photo
These hikes are for more experienced hikers, they tend to be more difficult and strenuous and are typically at least four or more hours long (ie - 8 to 12 miles). These hikes will be held in more distant areas such as along the farther stretches of the FLT or in the Catskills. In winter, these trips will usually involve cross-country skiing or snowshoeing.

One should bring a day pack to carry two quarts (liters) of water, lunch and snacks, a rain coat, a personal first aid kit, and other extra synthetic (non-cotton) clothing depending on the season. Sturdy hiking boots with a pair of sock liners and a padded pair of wool or synthetic socks should be worn. Most hikers also use hiking poles.
Bug / tick repellent is also recommended.

(Saturday
Hike  along the Shawangunk Ridge Trail, Sam's Point Preserve)

    - WEEKEND TRIPS

The TCHC sponsors weekend trips throughout the year to the Adirondacks, Appalachian Trail, and other similar areas. Depending on the trip description, these may be for experienced hikers and campers only.

Be sure to contact the trip leader well in advance of any weekend trip to review the equipment and gear that you will need to bring.

    - DINNER MEETINGS

These are held twice a year, in April and November, generally on a Friday evening. Meetings are open to members and non-members alike.

Club business is conducted at these meetings, and there is usually a guest presentation on a topic of interest to hikers.

- E-MAIL LISTSERV

Our e-mail listserv is hosted by Yahoogroups. If you aren't already a subscriber to this listserv, please consider joining this free Yahoogroup listserv, open to the hiking public by sending a 'blank' note (ie- no subject or text is needed) to tchc-subscribe@yahoogroups.com. You'll find that hike leaders often-times post reminders and additional information about their hikes to the TCHC Yahoogroup, as well as post-hike reports. The Yahoogroup listserv is also used to discuss general hiking questions.
