The Earth: Whose Home?

This program introduces students to natural communities and the niche various plants and animals occupy within different communities.  Students take on the role of a plant or animal, such as the "great green seed launcher" or the "radar-eared grass nibbler", and visit three different habitats found at Tayamentasachta - the marsh, forest, and field.  Students learn their needs for survival, and after visiting each natural habitat, decide where they make their home.  This activity helps our students understand how each plant and animal has an important role in the ecosystem and why it is important to preserve every habitat.  The students then learn how natural communities are lost when humans act irresponsibly.  The day ends when the students are encouraged to make discoveries of some of nature's smallest inhabitants when they establish micro-parks on the forest floor.
