Where and when

Classes are held in the gymnasium at Tavistock College. There is ample parking at the college.

Saturday Mornings – Beginners: 9am, Intermediates: 10am, Improvers: 11am.

We try to run throughout the year with a few weeks off for bank holidays and Christmas.  Dates will be published at the beginning of each term.

Sessions are £5.00 each, payable 3 times a year in September, January and  May .

Insurance is also required for each gymnast from the British Gymnastics Association.  You pay for this direct to British Gymnastics.  This is payable in September, currently £17.00 per year.  (If you start from April onwards you will only pay £10 for part year insurance).

If you start part way through the term fees will be payable from your first session to the end of that term.

We have an online system for payments and request these are done via card or paypal. If you do not have access or a problem with this our details are -
Tavistock Gym Club, HSBC, Sort Code 40-44-05, Acc Number - 11499386 Please use your child’s name as a reference.

New Starters

All children start in the 9am session so that the coach can assess which group will be most suitable for them.  Very able children will be moved up immediately, others will work their way through the groups as their skills develop.  Within reason we will try to keep friendships in mind when doing this however, as we want the children to feel at ease and happy.

New starters will be offered a free trial session.  If they like it and decide to continue then this session is payable. But if they do not wish to carry on then we will not make a charge for this session.

Sessions involve a warm up, stretching, then gymnastic activity.

We do not allow parents to stay, except for during the first introductory session.  This is recommended by British Gymnastics for safeguarding purposes, plus we have found that children are often distracted by people watching.  If your child has any particular concerns please speak with the Coach.

On arrival your child will be asked to come and sit on the mats with the other children in the group.  Once the register has been taken the session will begin.

Please note – we have no toilet in the gymnasium, so children will be taken across to the sports centre if they need to use the toilet during the session. This takes the gymnast and our assistant coach out of the session for several minutes so to avoid this happening we would appreciate it if you could encourage your child to use the toilet before the session starts!

The children will line up and receive a stamp on their hand for good work (please let us know if you do not want this done). They will then be handed over to a parent/carer.  All children must be collected by a known adult.  No child will be left unattended; if you do not arrive within 15 minutes of the end of the session we will try to contact you on the details provided.

What to wear

We do not have a club leotard but our colours are navy.  Shorts or leggings and t-shirt can be worn or a leotard if your child already has one, in any colour.  No loose fitting clothes, hoodies, clothing with belts or anything which could cause a child to get caught up should be worn.  Children are expected to take part bare foot.  Long hair should be tied up and earrings should be removed or covered.  Please also bring a bottle of water.

When your child starts gym we ask you to complete an enrolment form with full contact details and to give consent for photographs. Occasionally we will put photos in the Tavistock Times Gazette. We will not use photos on our website/facebook page.

We prefer to email but if you do not have an email address then we can give you a ring with information if necessary. We have a website and a Facebook page where you can find dates and other important information.

Children’s University Stamps

Children can get stamps for the sessions they attend. Please hand your book in on the last session of the term and we will complete it for the term. Please do not bring them on a weekly basis as it is the Chairperson who must sign the book, not the coach.

We are a committee run club.  Every June we have a small AGM where we ask for volunteers to help run our club.  Posts held are:

Chair, Secretary, Membership Secretary, Welfare Officer, Insurance Officer and Treasurer

Our Coaches are always at least Level 2 British Gymnastics qualified.

We also have an assistant coach, this is generally someone who has experience and enthusiasm in the sport, and may be training towards their level 1 in British Gymnastics Coaching.

All coaches, volunteers and anyone in contact with the children will have a CRB check completed via the British Gymnastics Association.
