Haribans Rai Bachan

The mental state of IRS officers as on today can be best described in the following lines of Late Haribans Rai Bachchan. Those who do not understand Hindi may use google to translate it.

In the book Madhushala, published in 1935, Dr Haribans Rai Bachchan has used fours symbols to express every possible emotional state of a man’s mind. These symbols are

1. Hala- Liquor
2. Pyala- Glass used for drinking
3. Saki- The bartender
4. Madhushala- Bar

The book is actually about spiritualism and philosophy. This philosophical/spiritual meaning of the book can be understood if you replace the above-mentioned four symbols with the following.
1. Hala- (Liquor)- LIFE
2. Pyala- (Glass used for drinking)- HUMAN BODY
3. Saki- (The bartender)- GOD
4. Madhushala- (Bar)- UNIVERSE

With this brief background, the translation of the lines posted earlier is as under.

It is about a person who has been walking tirelessly in pursuit of a goal and realizes that he has wasted a huge part of his life travelling only. Whenever he asks the bystanders about the distance to the goal, he gets the reply that it is still far away. The person is left with no courage to travel further; he neither has courage to abandon his pursuit and travel back home to happiness. The person at this point muses that the pursuit of the goal has put him in a To-Be-Or-Not-To-Be Situation!
