Story of Tillotama

                          Below given extract is the view of Mr.Pradipta Banerjee, published in the wall of Harappa.com in  Face Book. This observation has been made by him on November 3,2011. However the same observation has already been made by Shri Iravatham Mahadevan in his article titled,
                                              "The Indus Fish swam in the great Bath:
                                               A new solution to an old riddle"
                        (Reference --Page.no.44, Bulletin No.2, of Indus research centre ,  August 2011, Published by Roja Muthiah research Library). The difference between the two observations is that Pradipta Banerjee had compared the Cambodian Tilottama relief (in Musée Guimet, Paris) with Indus seal, where as Shri. I.Mahadevan had compared two Indus seals and explained the scene with Mahabharata story.(Two seals referred  by Shri. Mahadevan are given below under the heading "meaning of this scene)

                     The seal from Kalibangan depicting a woman between two fighting men is strikingly similar to the story of Sunda-Upasunda as depicted in the below sculpture. Kindly note the similarities : 1. They are holding her hands; each figure hold one hand. This is important because this is how Tilotamma was held by the asuras/demons. 2. She appears detached , oblivious to the fighting around her 3. The identical make-up of the two figures; suggesting brotherhood? 4. The background scenery; forests in both cases. 5. Semi-divine beings watching the outcome of this result.

                       In brief, two demon brothers receive a boon that they can be killed only by each other. As usual, they attack the 3 worlds after getting such a boon. The restless Gods create Tillotama, who causes a dispute among the brothers as to whom she will marry and ultimately they kill each other. What is the Meaning of this scene?

                    As explained by Shri .Iravatham Mahadevan and Pradipta Banerjee this seal indicates the story of Tilottama, that is fairly accurate, but what is the purpose of depicting the story? and what is the meaning behind this scene? For that purpose, we should consider all these seals together, where the same scene appears. Now, let us consider  these two seals referred by Shri. Mahadevan together.

(Seal.2, Mother Goddess and Tilottama)

From the above given  seals the following observations can be made:-

1)                       First of all,  the Tilottama story is very similar to the story of Mohini Avatar of Vishnu. The mohini avatar story seems to be a later day story and seems to be modified version of Tilottama story.

2) This beautiful women Tilottama may be representing the heavenly equivalent of  Virgo Constellation --- This Virgo constellation in turn--- may be indicating  June -July months of India---  Rainy season with thunder storms --- the clash of swords of Sunda and and Upasunda may indicating the lightening and thunder associated with rainy season --

3)                     The seal no.1 shows the tiger as well as Jar symbol ---As explained by me earlier ---- the jar symbol stands for the sound "Vu" meaning thereby a "day"--- So the conclusion is that --- the seal no.1 indicates month of June--July and day of Orion and Canis Major (i.e. Sun is in the constellation of Virgo and moon is nearer to Orion constellation)

4)                     Whereas in second seal the month is the same (Virgo month ---June -July) but the "day" is different --- the day is indicated by mother goddess most probably Leo Constellation (In India Leo constellation is indicated by Tiger because lion does not seem to be a native animal of this country --- present day, lions of Gir forest seems to be later day introduction in India --- As well as lion capitol of Asoka seems to be Iranian influence --- Lions are not depicted in any of the Indus seals  --- Along with this Horse controversy this lion controversy  may also be included--

5)                      In seal.no.2, there is a mark of "three stripes" in between figure of mother goddess and fighting duo --- this three stripes --- may be indicating the third day of the month   -- or third day ceremony after death of a person ---

6)                      Below the the three stripes there is a symbol of "Fork" ---As  already said by me --- the "Fork symbol" is nothing but symbol of hand with three fingers --(Kalan has only three fingers instead of the normal five fingers)   ----  These fingers also stands for "Vu" sound (meaning thereby "Day") (Sanskrit word for fingers is "Unguli" ---note the "Vu" sound) (Reference ---Fourth example for "Vu" sound)

7)                     Note that in seal no.2, the Tilottama figure is wearing bangles in only one arm, where as mother goddess in this seal is wearing bangles in both hands, which means that she was a married women, whereas a female person wearing bangles in only one hand might be an indication that she was an unmarried girl at the time fight between the duo---

                       Note the similarity of the way bangles are worn by Lambadi (Banjara) women and women depicted in seal --- See the article on Banjara in Wikipedia (descendant of forest living people) -- relevance of this information  is that  Banjara's are descendent of forest living people  ---in the Indus seal as well  as  Cambodia seal the fighting scene is happening in a wooded forest environment  --- -http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banjara  ----

 (All these observations in this serial.no.7 were made by a participant in a seminar, which was held at Indus research centre, Chennai in the year 2011--- I am not able to recollect the name of the person)

8)                              Whereas in seal.no.1. ---the person in between the fighting duo is wearing bangles in both arms  --- even though the gender of the person is not clear in this seal  --in can be deduced from the bangles that it is a female person ---

Second opinion on this Bangles issue:

                                It can not be definitely said that Bangles were only worn by women in IVC ---- other seals show that male persons were also wearing bangle like ornaments ---like women ---
of-course the yogi seal shows that yogi (a male person here) is wearing bangles in both his hands. Other seals also show similar characteristics.
