1) Indus Seals Deciphered--- (Table----13-seals)

Any reader of this website please be informed that statements and explanations pertaining to "Calendar Theory" and "Jyotish Vedanga" have become obsolete and wrong. The corrected version is available in the second website. Follow the link for second website --https://sites.google.com/site/indusharappacivilization/home.

The most significant interpretation is that this "fish" symbol indicates a "month" in all Indus seals . This particular break through in Indus script decipherment effort properly explains all inscriptions found on these Indus seals. These inscriptions indicate the "Annual death ceremony date " ( Thithi --or/ Shrartha ceremony date).

"Vu" symbol stands for ‘day" in Tamil Language. (INDUS SYMBOLS) and even now it is in usage, but this symbol is not regularly used, it is being used only on the special occasions like marriage invitation card or funeral invitation card or some important traditional documents. The third explanation for the "U" symbol is that it equalizes the ‘ (vu)' symbol of Tamil. (Refer to the Tamil symbols in the web site) (Omniglot.com.) (http://www.omniglot.com/writing/tamil.htm)

Symbol

--------------------Meaning-----------

One important symbol to be seen in this picture is that of Vedic fire pit ---seen near the left  foot of tree god--
part of fire pit indicates---Purva Phalguni--constellation(Leo)---as per Jyotisha Vedanga. (Ref-see-
Barbara's web site on Jytisha )

Presence of vedic fire pit in this seal links the creator of this seal to vedic people and "Purusha-medha" (Wiki Pedia)  (Human sacrifice yaga)

one important point to be noted here is that the details given in the scripts mention only about "Month" . But, no detail is given about "Day". It is likely that it is a "Solar Eclipse". On the day of solar eclipse both sun and moon are on the same spot, same constellation. Hence, there is no meaning in depicting the day separately.

At the same time, in serial.no.5 --Yogi seal ---again an eclipse is mentioned --- but, in this Yogi seal ---both month and day are mentioned "Remarkable"

This goat seal shows human sacrifice. The head is placed before the god on a stool.

The inscription reads like this: (from left to right):

On the Day of Karthigai  (or) ----Grahana day---- ( some kind of grabbing symbol--symbolizing act of Rahu grabbing sun or moon) ---next symbol is damaged not visible (month symbol damaged) -   month of ( fish symbol means month) ---- Sacrificed ( –indicated by vessel in which blood was collected and offered) ---one human being (see the body without head ) in honour of tree dwelling god. Goat (Aries) was witness to that sacrifice.

Other wise also--the position of goat symbol indicates and tallies to Aries constellation. Priest figure tallies to Perseus constellation and tree god to the Auriga constellation. The seven dancers stand for the Pleiades  constellation. The sacrificed head is placed in the position of Aldebaran star.

It looks like a ritual scene in which the dancers have participated and the respective positions of various characters reflect their place and position in heaven.(sky map)

2

The script in this seal reads like this (from left to right):

  1) The "X" symbol--it may be indicating some god---especially sky god holding the sky---(Or)

The second possibility is that it might have indicated the god shown in the seal itself-"Mrighashera" (lord Of animals) (Orion Constellation---the possibility is quite high---because  some time the Orion constellation looks like "X" in the sky) (Refer serial no.5 of Jyotisha vedanga table)

2) The second symbol-- the symbol looks like ---"Stump and left Slash" ---which indicates the "part of fire pit--(Vedic fire pit)---in turn indicates the month of "Purva Phalguni"--reference see-Barbara's web site--

3) month – (fish-- )—

4) on Aquarius day (symbol for water--- ) -

5) Jar symbol--indicating "Voo" sound-- (symbol for day)

3

This is the Asherah pole. The tree with peepal leaves identifies with mother goddess. The sign reads like this (from right to left):

1)         (First symbol)--- The calendar symbol with six season chakra---

2)- (second symbol) –cancer month---this stump and right slash is different from ---stump and left slash symbol of vedic fire pit---

3) (third symbol) fish symbol reads as “month”--- (fourth symbol) arrow reads as “day of”—(fifth symbol) quiver reads as “day of quiver” (day of Gemini)

4

The inscription on this seal reads like this (from left to right):

Sacrifice done (sacrifice of the bull shown in the seal) ---on Perseus day –month of –Aquarius

5

The eclipse recorded here is a "Lunar eclipse". Note that "Aslesha Month" and "Fish Day" are inscribed in this seal. Aslesha means snake (Hydra constellation)

One remarkable finding in this seal is that the position of Sun and Moon are accurately recorded in this seal --- The lunar eclipse occur   when sun and moon are at opposite ends and earth is in between them. Verification with astronomy soft ware shows that when sun was in Hydra constellation during a lunar eclipse, the moon is in Fish constellation . This constellation position is applicable for over a period of many centuries . (Refer NASA web site on lunar eclipse dates over a period of 5000 years)

The inscription reads like this (from right to left):

Kalan----grabbed by Raahu and Ketu (probably the crab symbols indicate the Grahana day here) ----Aslesha month (twin snakes joined to form “U” shape) (quotation mark between snakes indicates that it means a month) ------

Fish symbol here means “fish day” (27th day in the moon calendar) ------“U” symbol as usual means “the day”

 6)

The point i would like to make here is that ---- many of the Indus seal contains only four letter inscriptions , giving the details of Month and day ----But some of the seals have additional descriptions ---my humble opinion is that ----those additional inscriptions may be additional details about the time as given below---follow the link  -----

What could be the reading of this seal?

Most probably the event of death ceremony had been written twice like the Rosetta stone:
Note that Scorpio symbol and Chitra symbol are being repeated in both groups
( the writing direction starts from left to right)

A. The first four symbols form a group --
1.Squirrel may be representing ----- the Scorpio constellation
2. stump and slash symbol for a month (Scorpio month)----group of dot symbols stands for day ( day of chitra)
3. hands  may stands for fingers (Hindi=Unguli) --giving "U" sound- thereby giving the meaning "Day"  ( --/Or)---it could be giving the meaning ---- god of under world--melqart/Baal/ Hercules/
see the note below on melqart--- (the soul of dead person has gone into the hands of melqart or Baal)

B. The remaining five symbol forms a second group:
4. "U"--symbol stands for "Day of"
5. Rectangle and hook ----for Scorpio constellation ------
-Scorpius constellation---refer ---Wikipedia article on nakshatra---
The rectangle or mat like ---symbol may be indicating --Ara constellation---which is located just below----Scorpius constellation--
6 .the fish symbol ----as usual means ---"Month of"---
7. The last symbol----pearl symbol stands for ----day of chitra ---

Melqart
(From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia )

Melqart, properly Phoenician Milk-Qart "King of the City", less accurately. Melkart, Melkarth or Melgart ( Milqartu, was tutelary god of the Phoenician city of  Tyre as Eshmun protected Sidon. Melqart was often titled Ba‘l Ṣūr "Lord of Tyre", the ancestral king of the royal line. In Greek, by interpretatio graeca  he was identified with Heracles and referred to as the Tyrian Herakles.

Melqart was venerated in Phoenician and Punic cultures from Syria to Spain. The first occurrence of the name is in a ninth-century BCE stela inscription found in 1939 north of Aleppo in northern Syria, the "Ben-Hadad" inscription, erected by the son of the king of Arma, "for his lord Melqart, which he vowed to him and he heard his voice".

It looks like that this seal is a "Rosetta seal" of Indus civilization ---- (similar to the above seal) ---
---Start reading from right to left

1) First symbol--may be "Bootes" constellation.
2)Second symbol--may be Cancer (Crab) and Leo put together
3)Third symbol--- may be Pushya (flower ) constellation (Cancer-crab)
(Note----the cancer symbol is being repeated----)
4) Fourth symbol-quotation mark--indicates month---pushya month
5) Fifth symbol---fish---repeat of month symbol
6) sixth symbol---pestle and mortar symbol---standing for ---"Vu" sound (day)--
7)seventh symbol--trishul--kalans weapon or kalan's right hand
8) eighth symbol---U--symbol--meaning "day" or 40 th day ceremony

See, many of the symbols are being repeated---most probably this seal was made in the transition period from old symbols to new set of symbols---the priest who made this seal had shown both symbol for clarity sake.

 8)

Ref---Picture credit from web-site of Steve Farmer---
Read from right to left
1) Two persons carrying a mountain--
-allele of water carrier symbol
 indicating Aquarius month.
2) cancer symbol---cancer day---
3)---U---symbol--cancer day---
4)---man sacrificed
5)- U--symbol--sacrifice pot---
6) ---God---which god?
7) The god is indicated by the "Wheel symbol" over tigers back--
(Tiger is the Canis Major constellation)
----god who rides over tigers back is "Ayyappan"
(Ayyappan is part of Puppis constellation, which comes on the back of tiger, giving an impression that as if Ayyappan is riding on the tiger's back)

 9)

 1) Chitra month
2) "Quotation" mark means--month
3)the third symbol looks like the bull's horn,  which was sacrificed.
4) Sacrifice symbol
5)"Bow and arrow" indicates the day of "Punarvasu"  Castor and Pollux constellation.
Then the second line indicates the second event-- -that is planting of memorial stone---over the grave--
6) The sixth symbol indicates the memorial stone.
7) The seventh symbol indicates that the memorial  stone was planted on "Pipal Leaf "day
(that is--Andromeda constellation)
 10)
This symbol reads like this: Kalan ( ) is holding the symbol of his anus ( ) meaning there by Dhanistha Nakshatra/ day of Dhanistha/ 23 rd day of moon month. (Delphini constellation)

The tiger indicates the Auriga
constellation and the feeding trough indicates the Orion constellation. It means that a person had died in the month of Auriga / Orion, and on the 23rd day of moon month.

The annual death ceremony will be
held in next year on the same month and Nakshatra.
(Month and day

It is very rare to see such lengthy inscription on any Indus seal- (full narration not yet given ---details to be filled in)
1) There are three events here
2) all the three events are separated by "!!" mark----
modern Hindi also similar symbol is being used to mark as --
-"full stop symbol".
3) The first symbol --crescent symbol---may be indicating the ---waxing phase of the moon---
4) the next crescent symbol may be indicating the --
-waning phase of moon---or---the elephant tusk--
-Uttara Ashadha constellation----/Sagittarius constellation---
-yet to be ascertained properly---

 12)
The point i would like to make here is that ---- many of the Indus seal contains only four letter inscriptions , giving the details of Month and day ----But some of the seals have additional descriptions ---my humble opinion is that ----those additional inscriptions may be additional details about the time as given below----follow the link -----

There are three events in this seal ---all related to death ceremony:

1. First side---month and date of burial of a dead person.

2. Second side----Third day ceremony---indicating sacrifice of and blood offered to soul for its satisfaction or nourishment--and spear --indicates planting of a spear to mark the grave---

3. Third side-----Indicating the 40 th day ceremony---(karumathi)----in which-----last rites are done ---and it is finally concluded that ------the soul is finally released from all bondage ---and leaves the earth for good---some time they ---plant bushes on grave to mark the grave instead of spear----on 40 th day the bushes are watered-----watering of bushes is indicated by man carrying water--
----(or)---------water carrier is the symbol of Aquarius constellation --- means---24th day of moon month------
-----(or)--- May be the ashes are carried in two mud pots --in this kavadi style--and ashes are finally immersed in a holy river-----
The symbol of man standing between two lines---means "kalan" ---god of death--that the soul of dead man finally reaches the god of death---

 13)

1. Start reading from right to left ---( the side to which the animal is facing is the starting point)

2.first logogram---indicates the Auriga constellation--mother goddess---should be read as ---in honor of mother goddess---

2. second logo is---Perseus the priest with blood vessel/pot (blood of the sacrificed bull is collected in that vessel and offered to god)

3. Third logo is----!/ (stump and slash) indicates the cancer constellation----that is ----------cancer month.

4.Fourth logo is---the fish----as usual ---means---- "month of"

5. Fifth logo is ---crab----crab is again cancer constellation---then there is some mistake ---either stump and slash or crab for cancer ( this point is to be verified and corrected).

6.The last--sixth symbol is "U"---indicating as usual---day of-----
