2011, 1/9 : 35 Over Match

Khan laps the field with century in Taipei cricket.
(where discrepancies occur the Taiwan Cricket version should be taken)

After his recent dominance at the Taiwan Southerners Annual Tournament, Shezhad Khan once again stamped his class upon the Taiwan cricket scene. On Sunday he hit a rare century on Taiwanese soil, 123 from 127 deliveries to see the Taipei Lions to an easy victory over the Northern Giants. To illustrate his dominance the next best score was a pair of 21s from Sandeep Patel and Timmy Chang. The slight left hander batted right through the innings only being dismissed off the very last delivery.

The match was a new opportunity for the players with 35 overs available to both sides. The two composite sides were loosely based upon combinations of teams from the Northern League. Lions captain Mujahid Muhammad elected to bat after winning the toss and opened with Khan. The pair batted calmly for 11 overs and picked up 75 runs against luckless opening bowlers Heinrich Nothnagel (0-34) and Krishna Reddy (0-35). The introduction of spin saw Muhammad caught brilliantly at slip by Gitanjal Deka off Manoj Kriplani's bowling (2-21). Deka then entered the attack and trapped Rehan Naeem lbw for a duck. Three run outs added to the pressure, but Patel's innings and Shezhad's class ensured that the Lions batted out the overs and posted 213/8. Giants captain Ric McGrail (2-41) picked up two late wickets.

The Giant's reply was aided by some wayward early bowling, but again the introduction of spin saw wickets fall. Amjad Zafar (3-28) had Ashish Tripathi (12) caught by Muhammad with the score at 44 and from there nothing went right for the Giants. Thomas Rayen (1-22) induced an edge to end Chang's resistance and to round off his earlier performance, Khan took 3 wickets with some discomfiting over the wicket bowling. None of the remainder of the batsmen were able to offer much resistance apart from 17 from the blade of Brett Blain.  Khan got three deliveries to keep low and bowl Jay Magar, Mcgrail and Rakesh Sharma, Deka showed intent with a clean strike for six off Zafar over mid on's head only to be caught at square leg soon after and Kriplani's efforts were stumped by a quick piece of thinking by wicketkeeper Asif Tanoli. The Giants were eventually bowled out for 108.
