List of Categories


DEFINITION OF CATEGORIES 

These definitions are a guide to the categories within SMSS. Most models will fall into an obvious category courtesy of their subject and scale. However, some may not; if in doubt ask the SMSS staff when you enter your model. They (and if necessary the Chief Judge) will allocate your entry to its appropriate category. 
 

Junior entrants may choose to enter either the appropriate junior or general category

Junior categories are only open to entrants under 16 years of age.

Junior Aircraft:

Any flying machine, powered or unpowered, military or civil in any scale that is eligible for entry in any of the general aircraft categories.

Junior Military vehicles

Vehicles & equipment of a military or para-military nature in any scale that is eligible for entry in any of the general military vehicle categories. Includes unmodified ex-military vehicles

Junior Civil Vehicles

Any non-military land vehicle in any scale that is eligible for entry in any of the general civil vehicle categories. Includes trucks, motorcycles & modified ex-military vehicles.

Junior Open

Any entry that does not fit into one of the other three junior categories. Any scale.

General categories are open to entrants of any age.

Military Vehicles:

Vehicles & equipment of a military or para-military nature.
Includes amphibious vehicles, artillery & trailers in a towed configuration, horse-drawn equipment, railway vehicles, armoured police vehicles & civilian vehicles being used by military or para-military forces. May be  mounted on a simple base. Excludes towed artillery, trailers and equipment either deployed or on a fixed or static mounting, small arms & personal equipment. Includes unmodified ex-military vehicles. Excludes vehicles MODIFIED for use in movies or tv series Must be factual.

Large Scale: Scale is 1/39 & larger.

Medium Scale: Scale is from 1/60 to 1/40.

Small Scale: Scale is 1/61 & smaller

Military Jets:

Aircraft & other flying machines in military markings or used by military or para-military forces whose primary means of propulsion is by the rearward venting of gases from one or more jet, rocket or turbojet engines. Covers all aircraft types e.g. tankers, bombers, fighters, trainers, etc. Includes armed civil aircraft, wing in ground effect, tilt-wing, VTOL & vector-thrust aircraft. Excludes helicopters, rotary winged aircraft, turboprops” & ducted fan engines. Unmodified ex-military aircraft may be entered. Excludes aircraft MODIFIED for use in movies or tv series Must be factual.

Large Scale: Scale is 1/39 & larger.

Medium Scale: Scale is from 1/60 to 1/40.

Small Scale: Scale is 1/61 & smaller

Military Props:

Aircraft & other flying machines in military markings or used by military or para-military forces either unpowered or whose primary means of propulsion is one or more pusher or puller propellers. Includes turboprop & “ducted fan engines, tilt-wing & “armed civil aircraft. Covers all aircraft types e.g. gliders, balloons, tankers, bombers, fighters etc. Excludes helicopters or rotary winged aircraft. Unmodified ex-military aircraft may be entered. Excludes aircraft MODIFIED for use in movies or tv series Must be factual.

Large Scale: Scale is 1/39 & larger.

Medium Scale: Scale is from 1/60 to 1/40. Small Scale: Scale is 1/61 & smaller

Helicopters:

Military or Civilian rotary-wing aircraft or aircraft whose primary means of lift is by the downward thrust provided by either a propeller or movement of an avian-like wing. Includes ornithopters

& autogyros (e.g. Fairey Rotodyne), aerojeep & Flying Platform. Excludes, tilt-wing, VTOL & vector-thrust aircraft.

Excludes aircraft MODIFIED for use in movies or tv series. Must be factual. All scales

Civil Aircraft:

Aircraft & other flying machines either with civilian registration or of a non-military nature. Includes NACA/NASA craft & aircraft modified for movies. Warbirds (ex-military aircraft) can be entered as Civil Aircraft as long as it is modelled as such, including any appropriate markings & modifications. Excludes “armed” aircraft used by para-military forces, spacecraft & flying machines in the  “Helicopters” category. Excludes aircraft MODIFIED for use in movies or tv series Must be factual. All scales

Rockets & Space:

Military or Civilian rockets, missiles, satellites, spacecraft & any equipment designed for and/or used in space. May be manned or unmanned. Includes V2, Corporal Missile, Saturn V, Vostok, Lunar Rover, Mars Rover & Space Shuttles. Excludes astronauts, missiles on launch or transport vehicles & dioramas. Missiles & rockets may be mounted on a basic launch pad.

Excludes craft MODIFIED for use in movies or tv series Must be factual. All Scales.

Ships:

Any military or civil powered or unpowered vessel that is exclusively used on or in water is deemed a ship. Includes hovercraft, submarines, landing craft, pontoon ferries, canoes & rowboats. With or without figures. May be on a simple landscaped base. Wing in Ground Effect craft are deemed aircraft. Amphibious vehicles are deemed vehicles. Must be factual.

Excludes craft MODIFIED for use in movies or tv series. All scales

Civil Cars & Light Commercial Vehicles (Stock):

Vehicles in unmodified ex-factory 'standard' condition as used on the street or off-road. Includes cars, 'people movers', vans, light utility vehicles, 'utes', SUV's and similar vehicles. Includes such vehicles with special paintwork and minor correction work & light military vehicles that have been civilianized but are otherwise unaltered. Excludes extensive cosmetic alteration/'customizing' of the bodywork and engine swaps unless available as a factory option. Excludes Civil Custom and Competition cars. Trucks, Motorcycles, Hot Rods and vehicles MODIFIED for use in movies or tv series. All scales

Civil Cars & Light Commercial Vehicles (Competition):

Vehicles used primarily in performance competitions on race tracks and off road or rally circuits. Includes pro-street and drift competition cars.

Excludes Civil Stock and Custom cars, racing Trucks, Motorcycles, Hot Rods and vehicles MODIFIED for use in movies or tv series. All scales

Civil Cars & Light Commercial Vehicles (Hot Rods):

Vehicles significantly modified from their factory mechanical specifications, performance and/or to a lesser extent their appearance. Includes street rods and changes to engines, chassis and suspension and changes to the bodywork where the alterations are not the main or only change on the model.

Excludes Civil Stock, Custom and Competition cars, Motorcycles and Trucks and vehicles MODIFIED for use in movies or tv series. All scales

Civil Cars & Light Commercial Vehicles (Custom):

Vehicles with significantly cosmetically altered/’customized’ bodywork used on the streets or as show cars. Includes cars, 'people movers', vans, light utility vehicles, 'utes', SUV’s &  concept cars.

Includes vehicles with cosmetic changes where they are the major modification and engine/performance changes where they are secondary to any exterior modifications. Includes light military vehicles that have been significantly altered and civilianized.

Excludes Civil Stock and Competition cars, Trucks, Motorcycles, Hot Rods and vehicles MODIFIED for use in movies or tv series. All scales

Civil Trucks & Machinery:

Includes Trucks, buses, prime movers (with or without trailers), detached trailers, fire engines, train engines and carriages, trams, tractors, farming & construction machines, vehicles with heavy trailers, etc and racing trucks. Includes all such vehicles that have been customized and those with special paintwork and civilianized ex-military trucks. 

Excludes Civil Stock, Custom and Competition cars, Motorcycles, Hot Rod vehicles, Military Trucks and vehicles MODIFIED for use in movies or tv series. All scales

Civil Motorcycles:

Motorcycles (including sidecars), minibikes, trikes, scooters, bicycles, quad-bikes and racing motorcycles. Includes all such vehicles and any ex-military vehicles that have been customized, modified or altered. Excludes military or unmodified ex-military vehicles and vehicles MODIFIED for use in movies or tv series. All scales

Historical Figures:

A current or historical human or animal. Includes full figures, busts or flats. May be military or non-military, specific (W Churchill) or generic (German soldier). Includes actors (e.g. Bela Lugosi) but excludes the portrayed character (Count Dracula). All Scales

Fictional Figures:

Organic or inorganic figure, creature or monster from fiction (e.g. cinema, TV shows, anime, manga, comics, mythology, art, literature or imagination). May be full figures, busts or flats. Includes “power suits or armour but excludes Gundams & other giant robots and organic spaceships) All Scales.

Fictional Vehicles/Craft:

Organic or inorganic air, land or sea vehicles, spacecraft or equipment from fiction (e.g. cinema, TV shows, anime, manga, comics, mythology, art, literature or imagination). Includes “Gundams” & other giant robots and organic spaceships). Includes vehicles MODIFIED for use in movies or tv series. All Scales.

Vignettes:

Vignette will consist of no more than three figures with a vehicle or six figures as a group. Anything bigger will be classed as a diorama but an entry within the Vignette guidelines may be entered as a Diorama if the modeller so wishes. Must be on a landscaped base. All Scales

Dioramas:

Is anything larger than a vignette. Entries larger than 40cm x 40cm will not be accepted without prior approval and subject to available space (please contact the SSMS committee prior to the event if your entry is larger than this size). The diorama must tell a story. The entry must be on a single or joined landscaped base. All Scales

Open:

Any entry not eligible for any other category. Such as small arms, individual armour, personal military equipment, poseable figures, body parts, furniture or machinery. Includes buildings & artillery/equipment on fixed or static mountings not eligible for vignette or diorama categories
