FAQs
What are the courses in the ESL/Bilingual Education Endorsements?
See below; please note that all classes for the endorsements now are online. If there is enough interest from a school district or building to begin a cohort, course delivery can be made available according to teachers' interests, e.g., hybrid, traditional, or online.
How do I apply?
Undergraduates can simply enroll--no need to apply.
Graduates need to follow the application process found here.
How long will it take me to finish the endorsement?
Three semesters. Candidates will complete the endorsement requirements in under one year.
If the ESL and Bilingual Education endorsements are pre-K-12, what grade levels will my endorsement/s reflect?
Endorsements are associated with the grade level of your licensure.
Do I have to wait until a new cohort begins?
No, it's perfectly okay to begin at any time; our classes are scheduled for 8 week terms during the year and 4 week terms during the summer. Field hours, indicated below, can be waived with three months of teaching on a valid license in a classroom with ELs.

Do we meet in person?
No, meeting in person is not required for most of the courses; the exception is EDU 369/EDGTE 480. We do, however, sponsor events as a class, such as showing documentaries and facilitating discussion of language diversity for the SXU community.
I am available to you during my office hours, by appointment, via telephone, email, and virtual appointments on Canvas and google hang outs. Because I am often off campus, email is best; I will answer emails within 48 hours and usually much sooner than that. mcinerney@sxu.edu. Google hang out: khmcinerney@gmail.com.
Do we meet virtually at 5 pm each Monday of class?
No. Each week's learning unit will be available on Canvas on Monday of the first week at 5 pm and Tuesdays after that. You may work at your own pace during the week, with weekly assignments due the following Tuesday at 11:59 pm. This is an asynchronous course.
Are there required field hours?
Yes, there are 100 field hours required by the State of Illinois, and they are distributed among the four required courses that take place during the regular academic year (fall and spring). Ms. O'Grady, Assistant to the Director of Field Placement, will contact you about registering for field hours after you have registered for each class. If, however, you have three months of teaching experience with ELs (classified as ELs), these field hours are waived. You will need to provide a letter from a school or district administrator confirming this, prior to beginning the program, and the letter needs to be scanned and emailed to ogrady@sxu.edu; please simply attach the file and put "ESL/Bilingual Education Waiver Letter" in the subject line. If you have already provided us with this letter in a previous ESL/Bilingual Education Endorsement course, you do not need to repeat this step. Sample language for this letter can be found here.
For the endorsement classes, this means that the classroom where you are observing must include English Learners.
How do I know if any of the students in the classroom are English Learners?
If there are students who were screened for English language proficiency based on the Home Language Survey, have received instructional support as English Learners, and have not yet met the minimum composite score of 5 on the ACCESS test to exit out of services, then, yes, you may use that classroom setting as one that includes ELs. It's best to ask the cooperating teacher.
What are the required texts?
These can be found at the SXU Bookstore site and by clicking here (updated August 2018). I am transitioning to use free, OER (Open Education Resources) as much as possible rather as the alternative to traditional texts.
How do I register?
N.B., There is a new registration system that can be found when you click Academic Planning in your SXU Student Self-Service menu. More to come.
