SWOKE is pleased to offer the following workshops for the ongoing professional development of its members, our colleagues, and university students.  We also offer Clock Hours for Washington teachers through partnership with WMEA, in addition to PDUs for Oregon teachers.

Fall Workshop

Jo Kirk - "Tip Toe to Do-Si-Do"

October 14, 2016 / 9 AM - 3 PM

Location: Milwaukie Lutheran Church

This “energy packed/hands-on” workshop focuses on the development of the student’s movement, coordination and musical skills and abilities. Exploring a variety of developmentally appropriate movement activities, songs, finger plays, and singing games, participants will examine a movement sequence (simple to complex) and acquire knowledge and skills to implement these strategies into their Kodaly based curriculum. Materials appropriate for all learners, children through adults!

Winter Workshop

Andrew Brown - Choral Conducting Workshop

February 25, 2017 / 9 AM - 12 PM

Location: Vose Elementary - 650 NW 118th Ave

Description: Andrew Brown (BM - La Sierra University, Artists Diploma – Hartt Conservatory, MM with Kodaly-emphasis – Holy Names University) is the 2017 guest conductor of the SWOKE Choral Festival.  His conducting experience include ten years as conductor and musicianship teacher with the Pacific Boychoir Academy, conductor of the Da Capo Youth Orchestra at Holy Names University, artistic director of Contra Costa Children’s Chorus, and concert choir director at the Piedmont East Bay Children’s Choir where he developed a regionally recognized curriculum for advanced musicianship training.

Brown’s choirs have performed with Northern California’s leading musical organizations including the San Francisco Symphony, Oakland East Bay Symphony, San Francisco Choral Society, Santa Clara Chorale, San Francisco Bach Choir and UC Davis Symphony. He has toured dozens of times nationally and internationally.

Brown has appeared as a guest conductor with the New England Youth Orchestra, La Sierra Symphony and Hartford Conservatory Wind Ensemble.  His major teachers include Jon Robertson, Harold Farberman, Daniel Lewis, Gustav Meier, Anne Laskey, Judit Hartnyani, Ildi Salgado and Janos Harvoth.

Spring Workshop

Logan McKinney
"Two Pillars-Art Music in the Kodaly-Inspired Classroom"

April 22, 2017 / 9 AM - 12 PM

Location: Milwaukie Lutheran Church

What do Giacomo Puccini and Percy Aldridge Grainger have in common? Chinese folk song of course! Ildiko Herboly-Kocsar states "...Musical culture is built upon two important pillars: the one being the tradition of living folk-music and the other being composed music."  We will focus on the use of Art Music by means of direct and indirect connections with Folk Song.  Whether working with a group of Kinders or a University cohort, this workshop of art music applications is sure to inspire!
