Scholarship Recognition Breakfast Cancelled

posted Apr 28, 2020, 4:14 AM by Nicole Lindquist

Due to COVID-19, the annual scholarship recognition breakfast scheduled for May 6 in Council Bluffs has been cancelled. We are disappointed not to be able to honor the more than 100 deserving recipients in person. We know this event was also a highlight for our donors, without whom the financial assistance we provide wouldn’t be possible. These scholarships not only serve to make college more accessible and more
affordable but also allow for recognition for academic and civic achievement for the youth of southwest Iowa.
To all the donors, thank you. You are truly making a difference in the lives of so many. We hope to see you next year.

Online Application Live On Feb. 1, 2020

The scholarship application for the Southwest Iowa Educational Foundation (SWIEF) will be available on February 1, 2020. More than 80 scholarships are available to Southwest Iowa high school seniors interested in attending college.  The application deadline will be March 15, 2020. Supplemental materials will be due March 23, 2020.

After completing the initial application, students are matched with those scholarships in which they meet specific scholarship criteria.  Then applicants will receive a list by email of the SWIEF scholarships for which they qualify and can then complete any additional specific scholarship requirements. Some scholarships are based on financial need, but some are based on merit so students of all income levels should apply.

SWIEF was founded thirty years ago to improve access to post-secondary education for southwest Iowa students.  With a total of more than $85,000 and numerous scholarship awards in the amount of $1,000 or more, taking the time to submit an application can literally pay off for students.

“While we recognize the increased need for students to pursue a post-secondary education, we also recognize the financial difficulties and barriers students face as they embark on this endeavor; we hope to mitigate that burden, at least a bit, by offering some financial assistance,” SWIEF President Tori Christie said. “Of course, such financial assistance wouldn’t be possible if it weren’t for the generosity of individuals and families, as well as civic groups and organizations throughout the communities in southwest Iowa. We are grateful they are willing to provide support for such a worthwhile cause.”

The SWIEF award breakfast will be held this year on May 6, 2020 at 7:30 am at New Horizons Presbyterian Church in Council Bluffs.

A New Process

posted Jan 31, 2014, 7:27 AM by SW Iowa

In the past, students would have to read through every scholarship and determine their eligibility. This method had the potential for an applicant to miss certain scholarships. We've eliminated the need for that with our new online application. Once a student submits their application, we know exactly which scholarships they are qualified to apply for and email just those scholarships to the applicant.
