He married Phebe Unknown about 1612, probably in County Norfolk, England 5, 6. She was born about 1590, probably in County Norfolk, England7. More About John Swett:
Immigration: May 18, 1642; from England to North America (Massachusetts colony)10, 11, 12
Notes for John Swett:
Some genealogists report that John's father was Richard Swett, who was born about 1546 in England and died August 21, 1581 in Barnstable, Devon, England. Also, these genealogists have listed John’s birth as 1580, which resolves their problem with Richard’s death date and John’s birth date (I have reported 1590). However, they have no sources to back up the paternity; it is not supported by any known Vital Records.
John Swett was admitted to the freedom of Massachusetts Colony, May 18, 1642, and was one of the early settlers of Newbury, Essex County, MA. John brought his wife and four sons with him. He lived on the first lot east of the old landing, on the north side of Parker's River4.
Ten years after arriving in America, John died at age 62. The monument erected on the lower green at Newbury, MA to memorialize the first settlers does not bear the name of John Swett, but that of his son, Stephen; it being then supposed that Stephen Swett was the first one of the family to settle in Newbury4. Check out this website to view the monument: First Settlers of Newbury. Present day Newbury historians have acknowledged this mix up by listing John as a first settler on the website's side notes.
There are several generations between John Swett and his ancestor, Guy Swete (100+ years). Guy Swete fought for the Yorks in the War of the Roses in England. The Yorks ousted Henry VI in 1461. Edward IV of York replaced him. Henry VI regained the throne in 1470, only to be deposed again in 1471 by Edward IV, who became the king for the second time. Edward IV granted Guy a coat of arms and crest in 1473 for his assistance in the War of the Roses. The linkage between Guy Swete and John Swett of Newbury is substantiated by the silver flagon (pitcher) given to the Marblehead Church, Massachusetts, by the heirs of Joseph Swett, Jr. (1689-1745), great-grandson of John Swett of Newbury. The silver flagon was engraved with the coat of arms granted to Guy Swete. The names of Joseph Swett, Jr. (1689-1745) and his heirs, and the date May 7, 1759 are engraved on the bottom of the flagon (Ben Swett - Swett Genealogist). Photos of the flagon are viewable by clicking on Swete - Sweet - Swett "COAT OF ARMS" on my Genealogy Website.
John's wife, Phebe, died, a widow, May 6, 1665. Many genealogy researchers, including Stackpole, reported Sarah Larimore (born 1584 in Wymondham, Norfolk, England, died December 11, 1650 in Newbury, Essex, MA) as John's first wife. This widespread assumption is however not supported by the Vital Records. So, there is a strong indication that Phebe (maiden name unknown) was his only wife and the mother of his children.
Note the spelling variations of surnames. It appears that, historically, the English language was used flexibly and informally. Not only did sweat, sweet, swete, swett, and swet (and other variations) have interchangeable meanings, but also were pronounced both ways: "sweet" (the flavor) and "sweat" (perspiration). For example, the name of Joseph Swett, Jr. (1689-1745) of Marblehead, great-grandson of John Swett of Newbury, was spelled Swett, Sweat, Sweet, and Sweett in various church records and other original documents. Also, it is interesting that in A DICTIONARY OF SURNAMES, Swett, Swete, Sweet, & other variations have the common meaning of "a popular person who is pleasant and agreeable". For a further explanation, go to “Ben Swett’s Genealogy Site” (click on "The spelling of English surnames" ).

Notes for Stephen Swett:
Stephen built his home with an attached business (an "Ordinary" - tavern & inn that served a complete meal at a fixed price). The 4000 square foot building is still standing and is a historic property in Newbury, MA. It is owned by the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities; today, the house called the Swett-Ilsley House and is open for public viewing. Check out this website: Swett-Ilsley House.
Stephen sold the Ordinary in 1670, one year after Rebecca's death.
Stephen was an Anabaptist (Ben Swett - Swett Genealogist). The Anabaptists were the radical wing of the Protestant Reformation. The Anabaptist did not believe in infant baptism that was insisted upon by "state churches". They would re-baptized adults by immersion. In the 1500's, re-baptism was a crime punishable by death in many countries, and Anabaptists were hunted like animals. Many came to America to practice their religion in safety. They introduced the ideas of “voluntary” church membership and "separation of church and state" in America.
There is a monument erected on the lower green at Newbury, MA to memorialize the first settlers. It bears the name Stephen Swett, not his father, John Swett; it being supposed then by those early historians that Stephen was the first one of the family to settle in Newbury (Swett Genealogy, Everett S. Stackpole, publ. 1914). Check out this website to view this monument: First Settlers of Newbury.

He further served in the U.S. Military during a peaceful time following the Revolutionary War ("Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors in the Revolution", Vol. 15, p.285 & 308).
Abraham's sister-in-law, Elizabeth (Poor) Swett, was the sister of Benjamin Poor, who was formally married to Sarah Bradley before she married Abraham. Their parents were Benjamin Poor & Elizabeth Felt. Before marrying Abraham, Sarah Bradley and Benjamin Poor had seven children.

Notes for Joseph Swett and Mary "Polly" Googins:
Mary’s first husband, Louis Des Isles, abandoned her and their 7 children in 1811. He said he was leaving ME to collect an inheritance in France. He did not let Mary know he was alive for years. After 5 years of not hearing from him, she presumed him dead. In 1816, she married Joseph. After Joseph & Mary had a son in 1818, she learned that Louis was alive in France. She wrote to him describing her dilemma and he responded by saying that she should stay married to Joseph because his health was so poor that he would never be able to return to America (Carolyn Holland & Bruce Gillett). Ironically, he outlived Mary and died some 20 years later in France. He did write loving letters to his children in his later years, but he never returned to his family in ME (Edna Bearwald). Louis was buried in France. His children gave tribute to Louis by engraving his memorial monument (in ME, USA) with "Louis D. Dessisles, died in France, July 8, 1843, AEt. 74., Mary, his wife, November 27, 1825, AEt. 50." Louis’s memorial monument can be seen on findagrave.com.

Notes for Daniel Swett:
Daniel was born, raised, and married in MA. Also, he fathered his first two children in MA. At an early age, he completed an apprenticeship for a mechanical trade (Daniel's obituary). When he was 23, he moved to Georgetown, Washington DC where his next four children were born. In Georgetown, he owned a Grocery-Hardware Store on the corner of High & Bridge Streets (today called Wisconsin & M Streets), just a few city blocks from the Potomac River (DC newspaper advertisement for products). He had all the store's goods auctioned off before he left for MS (DC newspaper advertising the auction). After 8 years in DC (1828-1836), he relocated his family to Vicksburg, MS where his last five children were born.
Daniel became a wealthy businessman and community leader in Vicksburg, MS. He owned and operated a large hardware store on the northwest corner of Washington St. and Crawford St., a couple blocks from the Mississippi River (Warren County Land Deed Records). Vicksburg newspaper advertisements list the store's name as "Daniel Swett & Co." To view a store advertisement, look under “Family Photos” on my Genealogy Website. His home was attached to the back/top of the store (1866 Vicksburg City Directory). The building that housed his business and home is still standing in the Vicksburg's Historic District (Vicksburg historians reported that the building had several rebuilds/renovations after the tornado of 1953 and sometime later, a fire). Also, Daniel owned a summer home and farm three miles east of Vicksburg (Swett Genealogy notes from Vicksburg).
Daniel was also a gun dealer and sold the guns out of his hardware store business. It has been reported that Jefferson Davis's wife carried a “Swett Derringer” in her purse ("Southern Derringers of the Mississippi Valley" by Turner Kirkland, page 69).
Before the Civil War, the 1860 census reported the value of Daniel's real estate and personal estate at $73,000, which is equivalent to$2,267,371 in year 2020 currency599. Remarkably, he maintained his wealth during & after the Civil War despite a depressed economy and the freedom of his slaves (he owned 17 slaves, listed in the 1860 tax records). However, in the 1870 census, there was a shift of worth from his real estate to personal estate and an occupational change to farmer, which indicates that he sold his hardware business.
In 1867, Daniel accompanied his son, Charles, and other Southern leaders on an exploratory trip to British Honduras in hopes of finding a suitable place for their families to immigrate to after the Civil War. This trip was well documented in Charles Swett's book, "A Trip to British Honduras and to San Pedro, Republic of Honduras". To read Charles's book, go to the “Google Books” web site.
Daniel's cause of death was gangrene. He died at his residence in Warren County, MS. To read his obituary, look for file on my Genealogy Website.

Notes for Charles Swett:
At the beginning of the Civil War in 1861, Charles was a Lieutenant of Artillery in the US Army, having been an honor graduate of West Point - The United States Military Academy (Swett-genealogy records from Vicksburg, early 1900s). Upon the secession of Mississippi from the Union, Lieutenant Swett relinquished his commission and joined the Confederate Army. At Charles's request, his wealthy family assisted in the equipping of a battery with artillery for Confederate service. He was chosen as Captain of that artillery battalion by its 100 soldiers (more than an additional 100 soldiers joined the battery by the end of the war). Charles led the "Warren Light Artillery Battery" (also called "Swett's Battery") into battle at Farmington, Shiloh, Chickamauga, and 16 other campaigns. Later in the war, under General Hood, he served as the Inspector General of Artillery for the Army of Tennessee. Mississippi Civil War records show Charles as being promoted to the rank of Major towards the end of the Civil War. At the conclusion of the war, Major Charles Swett surrendered his troops with Gen. Joseph E. Johnston in Durham Station, North Carolina on April 26, 1865 (David Upton, Mississippi Civil War website). To read Major Charles Swett’s memoirs of his Civil War experiences, go to “A Brief Narrative of Warren Light Artillery” on my Genealogy Website. Photos of Major Charles Swett and the Civil War "Swett's Battery Flag" are viewable on my Genealogy Website.
After returning home from the Civil War, Charles was elected Senator for the State of Mississippi's provisional government. He served several years until the U.S. Congress, under the Reconstruction Act of 1867, imposed federal military rule over Mississippi (State Government of Mississippi, 1817-1917, Senate List).
In 1868, Charles accompanied his father, Daniel, and other Southern leaders on an exploratory trip to British Honduras in hopes of finding a suitable place for their families to immigrate to after the Civil War. They found this country unsuitable due to its lack of viable farmland, lack of infrastructure, insects, and disease. This trip was well documented in Charles's book "A Trip to British Honduras and to San Pedro, Republic of Honduras". To read Charles's book, go to the “Google Books” web site.
After returning home from British Honduras and writing his book, Charles became a lumber merchant in Copiah County, MS and sometime in the 1870s he moved back to Warren County where he managed his plantation (1870 & 1880 censuses).
Charles was also an inventor; he registered 10 patents between 1866 and 1873 (Mississippi Patents 1790-1873). These patents were for an artificial leg (1867), eight different bale ties - method of fastening cotton (1866-1872), and blacksmith fire tongs (1873).
It is interesting to note that in the pre-Civil War census of 1860, Charles's estate was valued at $31,000 (equivalent to $962,856 in year 2020 currency) and in the 1870 census, his estate was reduced to $7000 (equivalent to $137,754 in year 2020 currency)599. His post-Civil War wealth was greatly reduced due to his wartime absence, the wartime burning of his plantation home (Confederates in the Tropics: Charles Swett's Travelogue of 1868, Storm & Weaver), and the freedom of his slaves (1860 tax records listed him owning 19 slaves).
Charles’s plantation was located on Baldwin Ferry Road, six miles east of Vicksburg (Swett Genealogy notes from Vicksburg). Today, Baldwin Ferry Road ends at the Vicksburg National Military Park, which is about 2 miles from downtown Vicksburg; the eastern end of the road was closed in the 1900s to facilitate the park’s containment and a single entrance. In referencing an 1888 map of Warren County, the route of the original road went through the park area and traveled southeast; it appears to be the same route that Old Hwy 27 follows today. This historical map listed a 320 acre parcel of land on Baldwin Ferry Road with the name “Swett” printed on it. The parcel of land was located about 6 miles from Vicksburg.
Today, a small lake called “Swett Lake” is located off of Old Hwy 27 in the same area as the 1888 Warren County map showed the Swett plantation. To view a map of Swett Lake, go to the Going Outside website (zoom in on map & click on Satellite).
In his later years, Charles was involved in the local educational system of Vicksburg, MS. In 1898, he taught an eleventh grade class of only girls in the Vicksburg Main Street School (class photo).

Notes for Charles Jacob Swett:
Charles was a railroad engineer and worked from his home base in McComb, MS. In addition to his family's city home, he owned a farm outside of McComb. In his later years, Charles wanted to move the family to their rural farm, but his wife, Harriet, wanted to stay in the city. Family members reported that he moved to the farm without the family, and soon after divorced Harriet and remarried. However, his divorce and remarriage are questionable due to no documentation. The 1920 census reported Charles and Harriet as being married and living together with Ladell in McComb. In 1920, Charles was 65 years old and he died 9 years later.
Charles died of skin cancer. He had a sore on his ear, which he kept picking at. He did not seek medical attention until it was too late.

Notes for Harriet Margaret Jones:
In 1930, Harriet was living with her daughter, LaDell, in Detroit, MI. This was one year after the death of her husband; it was likely that she was unable to support herself. She also lived with her daughter, Dorris in 1940. A couple of years prior to her death, her son, Charles and his wife, Edna, were transporting her from TX to MI to care for her in her last years. Unfortunately, they were in a serious car accident in AR and Harriet was left in a coma for the rest of her life. Charles and Edna home-nursed her for several years until her death.

Notes for Charles Roy Swett:
Charles remembered African-American servants who assisted in his childcare. Also, as a child he remembered his sisters doting over him. Another childhood memory was vacationing in Biloxi, MS, a popular gulf port vacationing area.
In Charles's late teens, he left MS with a friend to find work in MI. A few years later, Charles and his friend went to Canada to join the Canadian Army in WWI. After the war, he returned to the Detroit area where he spent most of the remainder of his life. He was a union carpenter and primarily worked construction.
The 1920 census records list Charles as being married to Minnie E. Swett. However, there is no other documentation to support this marriage and his sons were unaware of a first marriage. The record showed Minnie as being born in 1900 in Wymondham, Norfolk, England and immigrating to the U.S. in 1907. Robert Daggatt, a boarder of Charles and Minnie's, also was born in Wymondham, Norfolk, England and immigrated to the U.S. in the same year as Minnie. It is possible that Robert and Minnie were siblings.
Charles and Edna had a few rocky years early in their marriage (the years between Charles Jr.'s and Earl's birth). She and her son, Charles Jr. moved to Ohio to live with her mother during their separation. It seems that Charles was quite the gambler and pawned Edna's wedding ring to get gambling funds. After reforming from gambling, he bought Edna a replacement wedding ring, which had a turquoise stone. These rocky years are documented in telegrams sent by Charles to Edna.
During the depression, Charles moved the family to Houston, TX, where his sister, Dorris, lived. They stayed with Dorris for a couple of months until Charles found work. He set up a cabinet shop near Dorris's home and would go door to door selling small corner cabinets. Later, they lived in a small shack with wooden boxes for furniture. In 1933, the family traveled from TX back to MI; the trip took six months. They drove an old Diana (the Diana Automobile Company produced cars between 1925 -1928), pulling a trailer with all their earthly belongings. Charles Jr. was seven and Earl was an infant. Charles Jr. recalled Earl being in a bassinet at night when they camped under the stars. It was a six months trip because they had to stop to make money for gas, milk, food, and car parts. Charles Jr. remembered his dad wrapping the tires with metal baling twine on the old Diana to prevent blowouts. Early automobile tires would fail often because of the rough roads; often cars would be equipped with two or more spare tires.
Charles rented homes and never owned property. He was fearful of the banks taking it like they did during the Great Depression with so many homes. He did not trust the banks for his savings either; he hid money in the walls covered by wallpaper and buried it in his back yard in glass jars. Unfortunately, when he died, the family could not search for any money since his house was rented.
Charles had an affinity for Studebaker automobiles. At his death, he owned several.
Charles died of prostate cancer.

Notes for Edna Gertrude Williams:
Edna was engaged to marry a man of whom her brothers disapproved. As a passive-aggressive prank, her brothers put a personal ad in the newspaper requesting a suitor for her. Charles answered the ad and the rest was history.

Charles had chronic asthma. It was so severe that his doctor warned him that he would die if he did not get off his farm. So he sold the farm and eventually found work in the auto industry. Unfortunately, asthma attacks became progressively more debilitating; so his doctor recommended that he move out of the state of MI. He moved to TX, where his asthma symptoms subsided to the point he no longer needed medication.
