STRONG SHOWING BY SWEETWATER Track & Field
Sweetwater Track & Field finishes a very successful week by placing third (3rd) as a team at the Sweetwater Relays.
The week began with hard fought but convincing victories over arch rival Olympian High by the Girls, Varsity Boys and Junior Varsity Boys track teams. In the first South Bay League action the three time defending champion Lady Devils out scored the Eagles by a score of 76 to 60. Leading the girls team with two wins apiece were Sr. Prizma Mendoza and Jr. Vicky Ah-You. Vicky led the girls in a sweep of both the Shot Put and the Discus, highlighting the Discus with a Personal Best throw of 92 ft and 5 inches. Joining her in the sweep were Krystal Del Valle and Anastacia Rodriguez. For her two victories Prizma won the 800m and 1600m runs. Jr. Carlos Ponce who won three individual events, the 800m, 1600m, and 3200m led the Varsity Boys to a 84 to 52 victory. With teammates Abdi Castellanos , Jonathan Cardenas, Gerrado Marquillo, and George Martinez the Red Devils also swept each of these distance events. Jr. Alejandro Garcia also turned in strong performances in the hurdles, Jr. Ronnel Jamir in the shot Put and Discus. The Junior Varsity boys also came away with a 77 to50 victoy. But the individual highlight of the day was So. Rosaro Huerta’s (AOW) victory in the Girls 300m Low Hurdles winning with a time of 49.6 seconds, equaling the sixth (6th) fastest time run by a girl in Sweetwater history.
Two days after the winning effort at Olympian the Sweetwater Red Devils were hosting and participating in the Annual Sweetwater Coed Relays. For the eighteenth consecutive year Sweetwater hosted fifteen (15) area teams, in two divisions, Large (2000+) Small (>2000) for a unique track and field sporting event, coed relays. The hugely popular track meet was run for the first time ever on the all-weather surface at Otay Ranch High School. The team did an outstanding job of hosting and running in Division I (large schools). The Girls and Boys teams combined efforts and finished a strong third (3rd) place. In a very competitive meet just twenty-three (23) points separated the first place (1st) and fourth (4th) place teams. While many Sweetwater athletes contributed to the success of the team, the most stirring and exciting wins were in the Freshmen-Sophomore Coed Mid Distance Relay and Freshman-Sophomore Boys Sprint Medley highlighted by the performances of Fr. Bryan Martinez (AOW).
