December 2018

Let me begin by wishing everyone a Happy Holiday season and a Happy and Prosperous New Year.

Thanks to the combined efforts of Shirley Johnson, Janet Buckley, Pat Gillespie and Linda Gallose,  this year’s Holiday Gala at Sea Trail Convention Center was a huge success. The Sea Trail Convention Center will be closing so we need to look for another venue perhaps a change in the party’s format.  We need to resolve this matter at the January so we can book a date for 2019. Your input is critical to the Board making a decision.

Approximately 190 members have not renewed their memberships for 2019.  This is a last call before we close the books. Checks should we mailed to SWBNC, PO Box 6935, Ocean Isle Beach, NC 28469

Our guest speaker for the January meeting will be John Ingraham of Shallotte. He will be discussing the new tax law and its impact on all of us.

Special events for the spring are coming together as follows;

* February 11th: The Cooking Club’s Valentine luncheon at Bistro 90.

* March: Trivia night

* April: Mini-golf

* May: Pelican Baseball game

* June: Installation luncheon

* Other potential events

o  The Charity Dance

o  A dinner theater outing

o  Couples bowling

We can still use help with these events. See me or any Board member.

Again……Happy Holidays to all.  Hoping to see you all on January 10, 2019

President Pete

November 2018

To All Members,

Mother Nature has not been kind our club this season. We were forced to cancel our September kick off meeting and our October guest speaker had to cancel due to the pending hurricane. But with your help we will get our club back on track.

To date only half of the membership has renewed.  If you will not be in attendance at the November meeting please mail your membership renewal to: SWBNC Treasurer, PO Box 6935, Ocean Isle Beach, NC 28469. A new member/renewal form is available on the club’s web site.

Our guest speaker for the November 8th meeting will be Belinda Musgrove, Brunswick County Sheriff's Animal Protective Services. She will provide an overview of the shelter’s operation and will be accompanied by some of her furry clients.

Events are a big part of our club’s success. To date members have or will be enjoying;

·        Oktoberfest luncheon at The Cafe Old Vienna in N Myrtle Beach

November 9, 2017 (updated)

Greetings!!!!

Well here we are again searching for a new event chairperson. And in case anyone is wondering we are still trying to find members for the by-laws and nominating committees. I know everyone was very interested in knowing what chairs needed to be filled. LOL! Please feel free to reach out to any member of the board if you are interested in serving on one of these committees. Your volunteerism is greatly appreciated.

The speaker for the next general meeting is Gary Halberstadt who is the President of the Brunswick County Arts Council. The Brunswick County Arts Councils purpose is to financially support and advise students, seniors and the arts community. In the last 7 years over $700,000.00 has been donated.

Don’t forget to sign up for the Holiday Gala, which is being held on December 1. The deadline is November 21. The costs remain the same for attendance. $30.00 per member and $40.00 for non-members (such as your friends). We will have Linda Gallose from the gala committee registering people before during and after the meeting. Don’t forget this year we have a band that has volunteered their time…Opportunity Rocks!

Unfortunately, there was very little interest (which might have coincided with very little time in planning) in the Alabama Theater Christmas Show so that event was cancelled this year. But we hope to have it next year. Hopefully by then we will have an events chairperson.

However, on a good note the Trivia Night is taking place at the Calabash Elks from 6-9 The cost is $17.00 per person Deadline: January 16, 2018. Please reach out to Mary Lou Salter at mlbsalter@hotmail.com with any questions. Marylou will be registering people before during and after the meeting. Menu Choices are 1. Salad, Meat Loaf with Mashed Potatoes, Gravy OR 2. Salad, Fried Chicken with Mashed Potatoes, Gravy **both served with Vegetable with Roll and Butter** and a cash bar will be available. Please make sure you include your menu choice with your RSVP. Rules of Play: A Trivia Team may not consist of more than 6 players. (You may form your own team of 6 players or we will group members in teams of 6 players).

I am doing my best to keep up with the events but I am not making any promises. What I would suggest (or request) is that you do what the Salters did. If there is an event you are used to doing and like it please give me a hand with that event. Just let me know and I will be happy to help you out with it any way I can and then we hopefully will have some success in keeping things going. Also, if there is an event you would like to try, please let me know. I’ll see what I can do to get things started with your help of course.

The next event after the holiday gala and the trivia night would be the Road Rally. Two years ago it was held on January 25th. Perhaps I can get someone’s help with this? Please call or text me if so 910-880-0987, or you can always email me.

The next meeting will be held on November 9th at 10:00 A.M. at the Shallotte Presbyterian Church the address is 5070 M.H. Rourk Drive, Shallotte, NC 28470.

Please visit our website at www.swbnc.org to get all the latest information on Activities, Events, and Guest Speakers for our upcoming General Meetings.

One more reminder, please do not forget to renew your membership! And bring a friend.

See you at the meeting!

Thank you,

Lisa

September 7, 2017

As a new member and the brand-new President, I would like to extend my hand to each and every member. Whether it’s your first meeting or you have been at every meeting since inception, I would like to meet you. I may not remember everyone's name, but thankfully we have name tags! So please stop by and say hello!

I am sure some members that have been here a while might have some thoughts and hopefully some new ideas! I am looking forward to hearing them! Please call me, email me or come and talk to me and let me know what they are. I’ll be
happy to hear from you.

We are in dire need of assistance. I cannot stress enough that this club cannot run itself. Although it basically does just that, we still need volunteers to help the continuity of this club. Now you might be saying to yourself why volunteer? I’m
going to say back to you why not? Your help is desperately needed. As I was in one of the first board meetings the other day the comment was made that it’s the same few members always doing things. Isn’t that how it always is? Everywhere? I would love to be able to offer you something for your volunteerism, but the best that I can do is say thank you for any help you could possibly give. We have in excess of 500 members and in order to keep the club moving forward and in the right direction we are truly in need of your help. Please consider doing something, anything. We need
a tech person. That’s something as simple as just coming for the meeting and helping us get our technical issues underway for the presentations that guest speakers bring. Also, we need a couple of people to help out with events and
hospitality (yes nametags) can you hand out name tags and put them back in alphabetical order? Some of these positions are not hard and if you aren’t sure how to do them, we are here to help you.

I cannot say thank you enough to our board members. Without them I would be lost as to what to do and when to do it.

Listed here are your new board members please welcome them and most of all please help them.

1. President – Lisa Damico (New)
2. 1st Vice President – Carolyn Gardner (New)
3. 2nd Vice President – Greg Cowley (New)
4. Treasurer - Walt Shannon (New)
5. Secretary – Debbie Krzywicki
6. Website Manager – Kathy Hill
7. Activities Coordinator – James Hill
8. Events Coordinator – Need to fill
9. Hospitality – Need to fill

The guest speakers for the upcoming meeting will be representatives from the Museum of Coastal Carolina (Maria Knapik) and the Planetarium in Sunset Beach (Katherine Hunt) who will describe what these locations have to offer to the public. I hope everyone got to see around the clouds and get a glimpse of the eclipse.

The next General Meeting will be held on Thursday, September 14th at 10:00 A.M. at Sea Trail. The address is 75 Clubhouse Rd, Sunset Beach, NC 28468. The next board meeting will be held on September 28th at 9:00 A.M. at Shallotte
Presbyterian Church.

Please visit our website at www.swbnc.org to get all the latest information on Activities, Events and Guest Speakers for our upcoming General Meetings.

See you at the meeting!
