Classic Yacht - 55ft Tripp/Abeking & Rasmussen cutter

55ft flush deck, Tripp/Abeking & Rasmussen aluminum cutter. That was all we needed to hear before jumping on a plane in Boston for Florida the next day.  It took us one look and 15 minutes to make a deal with the owner. That was over 32 years ago and in that time we have sailed Dancer about 125,000 miles, the last 20 years enjoying the remote reaches of the Pacific.
We have finished an 18 month refit in New Zealand with $95,000 spent on parts and supplies alone, not including labor (see list of items below).  Dancer is a very special, one off yacht, built in 1965 by A&R. She was designed as a CCA ocean racer [ex-Avenir] by Bill Tripp and is a sister to Ondine II, one of the most famous ocean racers ever.  These designs have proven over time, to be the most capable and comfortable yachts for ocean cruising. All our miles have been done by just the two of us, and whether ghosting along, or shortened down in a gale, Dancer has been an easy, forgiving  yacht to sail. We have maintained her with the best materials and workmanship possible. When we talked to Mrs. Armstrong, the original owner, she said that we would always have the most beautiful yacht in the anchorage. This has certainly been tested by some megayachts as we cruised the world, but their captains have told us that this is the yacht they want when they retire.

On long ocean passages we find that we keep pace with similar size modern monohulls and catamarans.  Dancer is the perfect yacht for a couple or family to cruise, long enough to comfortably knock off 200 mile days, but easy enough for one person on watch to handle.  Her incredibly strong hull and top quality sail handling gear are a great peace of mind when you are thousands of miles from port.  The mechanical systems are simple, high quality and redundant.  Two sources of 12v power and hydraulics, 2 freezer units, 2VHF radios, 2 gps,  3autopilots, 2 satcoms, multiple bilge pumps including a 2”, 200 gpm hydraulic powered  damage control pump.  There is a Bauer dive compressor built in to support our diving activities and enough locker space for all the equipment and spares long distance cruising requires. The forepeak is dedicated to sail bins, work bench, spare lines and gear. This can be isolated from the main cabin by a watertight door. The main cabin is a version of the traditional ocean racer with upper and lower berths on port, double berth on starboard.  Aft of those is a saloon table on port and head and owners cabin on starboard. Further aft by the companionway is a galley to port and large nav area with quarter berth to starboard. The nav area has a comfortable seat with a pull out, gimbaled tray for a laptop.  The galley is located next to the companionway  and has three opening ports for great ventilation. It has easy access to the cockpit and is a great place to cook at  anchor or underway. There is a safety bar on the gimbaled stove next to the combination freezer/refrigerator. There is a large teak counter that is adjustable for angle of heel that makes cooking offshore easy.   The floors are solid teak with lift out panels for complete access to the bilges and clean out ports on the fuel and water tanks.

There is a large secure cockpit that makes sail adjustments easy with oversize Barient SS winches and Harken SS blocks. There is a 44”  SS wheel on a custom chrome bronze Edson pedestal with a glass dome White compass. Engine controls are by Kobelt.  On deck there are mid deck boxes for spare deck gear and 2-20lb propane bottles. There is a SS rack middeck that supports the 3.4M rib upright with it’s 25hp outboard for easy, out of  the water secure storage. With the outboard stored in a cockpit locker, the rib can be deflated and easily turned over and lashed to the rack  to be a low profile package for going offshore. The forward hatch is a large sliding hatch protected by a dodger that allows the hatch to remain partially open offshore creating good airflow through the cabin. At anchor, this dodger flips up to act as a wind scoop.

The original mast was replaced in 1968 with a taller, double spreader, tapered aluminum mast.  The boom was custom built in 1994 from aluminum and features an internal doubler for the vang attachment and pipe rack for sail reefing and furling.  The mast has a new Harken mainsail track and spinnaker pole track. Sheaves are all heavy duty ball bearing.  The furling gear for the genoa is a Profurl N52 and the staysail is on a new Harken IV furler.

Contrary to the old saying about the two happiest days of a yacht owner being the day they buy it and the day they sell it, it is going to take a piece of our heart and soul when we sell this fine yacht. Dancer is currently in New Zealand.  The asking price is 375,000 Euros.  Please contact us at
