GPS COORDINATES & MAPS

Listed below are all of the primitive island campsites maintained by SRTA.  They have been developed for your use and enjoyment. If you observe campsite damage, missing signs, vandalism, or suspicious activity email  susquehannarivertrail@gmail.com

The GPS coordinates will help you locate the island. They will not, however, pinpoint the campsite on the island.  All campsites are marked with signage, which is visible as you proceed downstream.

New Island Camping Opportunity South of Harrisburg

40°10'54.4"N / 76°45'14.3"W    (40.181764   76.753986)

Sassafras Island, in Dauphin County, is now available for primitive camping. The island is on the river between Middletown and Royalton and close to the Harrisburg International Airport (see Google inset map). A site on the island has been prepared with the same basic amenities (fire ring, marker post, logbook box, signage) found on river trail islands between Sunbury and Harrisburg. Leave No Trace camping guidelines apply. The site can be easily accessed from the PA Fish and Boat Commission launch at the mouth of Swatara Creek or, for a longer expedition, from a boat launch in Steelton. Through paddlers trying to reach the site from Harrisburg must portage the Dock Street Dam. Also note that the York haven Dam is encountered a few miles downstream of Sassafras Island.
