The church was founded in 1218, with the current building dating from around 1350. Four bells are recorded in the Church Inventory of 1552. Two trebles were added in the 17th century and the six were re-hung in the old frame after being re-cast by the Whitechapel foundry in July 1812. Two further trebles were added, together with a clock, and the tower opened for ringing again on 27 November 1829. Tiebars had to be added to hold the tower together around 1927, but it was damaged during The Second World War, and was declared unsafe in 1954. Restoration, using a new steel ‘inner tower’, was completed for re-dedication on 12 December 1970.
