Student Delegation 2014
The Sister City Commission is now accepting applications for up to 12 Student Delegates and 2 Chaperones to participate in the 2014 sister city exchange visit to Ami-machi, Japan.
Tentative Dates: The one-week trip to Ami-machi usually takes place around the first weekend of August, to coincide with the “My Ami Festival”, at which the Delegates will be special guests.
Activities: Past activities have included a visit to a temple, a traditional Japanese tea ceremony, and trying some traditional Japanese crafts. Students will stay with a Japanese host family.
Application Process: Students from Superior or Douglas County who will be entering Grades 9—12 in the fall of 2014 are eligible to apply by filling out and submitting an application. There will also be an in-person interview. Delegate selection will begin in early 2014.
Cost: Costs will vary depending on airfare and personal spending allowances. In 2012, the average cost was between $2,000 and $2,500. To help defray the cost of the trip, as well as a portion of the chaperones' airfare, student delegates and their families are expected to help organize and participate in fundraising events and activities. These activities will also be an important part of team-building for the group.
One scholarship to help defray part of the cost of the trip will be available. Applications for this scholarship will be available after student delegates are selected. If you are interested in becoming a member of the next Delegation trip in August 2014, see our application forms and FAQ linked below.
