Who We Are

EVERY 2nd and 4th THURSDAY OF THE MONTH . . .

A group of people get together for an hour and a half at Sidetracks Restaurant, one of the many fine restaurants on Queens Boulevard in Sunnyside.  They start off saluting the flag,  and then sit down to a good meal.  During the meeting they talk a lot, just as other people do, about their children, or a recent trip.  They also kid each other and  laugh a lot and enjoy each others company. Then, when the President calls the meeting to order, they quiet down to hear “The Program.” Maybe it’s the director of the town marching band, or a spokesperson for the new YMCA. It might be someone from the Senior Center or the Captain of the 108th Precinct. The variety is infinite. A frequent topic of discussion is how things are in the neighborhood or what the next service project will be.

WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE ?

Come along. Let’s meet some of them here at this meeting. The man playing the keyboard is a local attorney. The couple in the corner are our neighborhood plumbers, and are very devoted to community service. This woman is the principal of a local pre-school and served multiple terms as club president. The tall  man is the director of the town marching band founded by one of our members who ran the town newspaper.

This young woman, our newest member is now the third generation to run the newspaper. That gentleman is a neighborhood clergyman and the young woman sitting across from him is the executive director of a large social service agency. You might never learn any of this unless someone told you, because they all dropped their titles when they came in the door.

WHY ARE THESE PEOPLE HERE ?

Two reasons. First, the rest of the members wanted them in the club, and that gave them the privilege of joining the club and attending all the meetings.  Second - and the only one that matters now - they are here just because they wanted to come. And will come back, week after week.  It’s that simple, that enjoyable and rewarding.

WHAT’S THEIR PURPOSE ?

To make Sunnyside a better community. That’s why each year they raise thousands of dollars - and use all of it to provide a long list of service projects and in support of many good causes. It’s a service club, and these people do these things week after week because they want to.
