Join our Club members as we greet a very special guest speaker, the Honorable Harry E. Mitchell, former Democratic U. S. Representative for the 5th Congressional District of Arizona.
An Arizona native, born and raised in Tempe, Mr. Mitchell earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Arizona State University in 1962 and then his master’s degree in Public Administration in 1980. He began teaching American Government and Free Enterprise at Tempe High School, his alma mater, in 1964. He remained there until he retired in 1992.
In addition to serving his community as an educator, Mr. Mitchell was elected to the Tempe City Council in 1970. He was then elected Mayor in 1980 and held that position until his retirement in 1994. He went on to win a seat in the Arizona Senate in 1998 and was term limited with the 2004 campaign. He was Chair of the Arizona Democratic Party and stepped down in April 2006 to run for U. S. Congress.
Mr. Mitchell served in the U. S. House of Representatives from 2007-2011. He was the Ranking Member on the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations for the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs. He also held other subcommittee assignments on the House Committees on Science and Technology and Transportation and Infrastructure.
Our ongoing Club community service project is to support the nearby Matthew’s
Crossing Food Bank. Please bring non-perishable food items to the club meetings. Collections take place in the west parking lot from 6:30 to 7:00 p.m. Also the box has been returned to the west entrance of the Sun Lakes Country Club Clubhouse lobby. Donations can be dropped off there at your convenience. Thanks for your generosity. Please keep up the good work. February donations collected 189lbs + $35.00 cash. Total 11 months donations collected is 2325-1/2 lbs + $293.00 cash.
Club meetings are held the second Monday of each month. Everyone is welcome. We encourage you to bring a friend.
