This website has the very first lines of poetry written by me in any language. A maiden effort !

Please note : All Lines in BLUE are my original writing and under copyright. Please excuse any rough edges(khata maaf), since I am a novice and I have been bereft of my wife’s presence for the past 2 yrs due to visa problems.

I thank Ali Rizvi Saheb for his unstinting support, patience and encouragement. And also for prompting me to think about my takhallus, which I promptly did - Ummeed.

arz kiya hai,

kaun kehta hai ishq me bas ikraar hota hai
kaun kehta hai ishq me bas inkaar hota hai

Kya kahain unhein yeh sukun-e-dil hai mahaz"

The original  Aarzoo Sherila  Sher

5/10/06

The sher that I found simply irrestible and that started this whole saga, sent over via email to Delhi !

Aarzoo hai door se dekhne ki
Kareeb aana bhi nahi chahte
Tamanna nahi tumhe pane ki
Magar khona bhi nahi chahte

Says a lot, and leaves a lot unsaid, is quite abstract

Unfortunately the literal concrete expression portion trumps the inexpressed idea or probably the whole idea is quite inexpressible which is fitting since it is sort of about the unattainable. (that is the crux of this sher)

and the travails begin or maybe even a saga of sorts

mushkilon ka aaghaaz !!    I think I will be analyzing this sher and dicing and slicing it for the rest of my life !!! It caused a lot of dismay, alarm and miscues. Alls well, that ends well.

Ali Rizvi's Comment

Sumeet: Beautiful. Such simple words,,, and so much said...
Another shair whose poetry is very simple Khumar Barabankvi.

Woh Hame jis kadar aazmaate rahe
Apni hi mushkilo ko barhaate rahe,

Theen Kamaane toh haato mein aghiyaar ke,
Teer apno ki janib se aate rahe
 [aghiyaar: friends, kaamaane: teer-kamaan]

Ali's sher was emailed right off as a emergency first aid measure !

Despite that certain consequences were natural

sher ke mooh me sher de diya, bhai

but all hope was not lost

And Ummeed was the moniker I adopted right then and there!

Thereafter what I term as the "Sherila Sher 2", was my original contribution this one was not sent for obvious reasons,

the fires of temper were burning,

but the fires of creativity were being tempered, so to speak

but it confirmed in my mind that Ummeed was a suitable takhallus.

arz kiya hai   ( Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan ki ghazal )

Aapse milke hum kuch badal se gaye
sheyr parhne aur likhne lage..gun gunane lage
pehle mashoor thi apni sanjeedgi
ab to jab dekhiye..muskurane lage!!!

(read the rest of the ghazal at the bottom of page)

Sherila Sher 2

My second effort which was not emailed

Shairi ke sher ne hame saamne dhar diya sher ke
Shairi ke sher se hi hamne samna kiya sher ka
Shairi ka sher pesh dilbar ka kiya dil dilshaad
Aur ab bhi hai Ummeed ko hone ki abaad!

rashq aur ashq

A sher written and emailed after a telephone call from Delhi

Ummeed yeh karta hoon na aur khaao rashq

Varna tumhare aur bahenge neer aur ashq!

[ Ummeed, my takhallus (pen name), also means hope, rashq -  hatred,  neer ,ashq - tears]

By this juncture, the game was afoot !!    (very sangeen khel it was)

5/14/2006  The follow up sent to Ali Saheb

Maana ki pehli khata (khat me) humne ki, aur unko sherila sher bheja
Par uske pashtaach hum phasey sandwich mein.

arz hai

vaise  to sab hi kabhie na kabhie is daur e sandwich me  phastey hain
aise  sandwich hamare mein to bhaale bhi  bastey hain
taise  aapne aisa jawab e sher pesh kiya ki ab woh phir se  hastey hain

excuse the rather forced last line

ab UMMEED ke jaise taise (unke) sitam se haal to bahut khastey hain[ Bhaale - the deli sandwiches with the toothpick in the middle, ouch! ]

In Punjabi it was a case of

Sand wich de wich”  (inside the sand wich ! :))

Email Na Milne Ka Jawaab !

A trite one that I found and emailed to Delhi
but in the context makes sense      5/12/2006

and of course a sher to break the silence

Koi ankhon se baat ker leta hai,
koi ankhon me mulakat ker leta hai,
bada mushkil hota hai jawab dena
jab koi khamosh rehker saval ker leta hai

Sunte Hai Ki Mil Jaati Hai Har Cheez Duaa Se

One of the most beautiful verses set to music, and quite in context
sung by Habib Wali Mohammed, a gem of a singer, lyrics Rana Akbarabadi

tum saamane hote ho to hai kaif  kii  baarish
vo  din  bhii  the  jab  aag  barastii  thii  ghataa se

ai dil tuu unhe.n dekh ke kuchh aise tadapanaa

duniyaa bhii milii hai Gam-e-duniyaa  bhii milaa hai
vo kyoon  nahiin  miltaa jise maangaa  thaa Khudaa se

there is another geet/ghazal sung by Habib Wali Mohammed titled

Aisi Bheegi Suhaani Raat Mein, Teri Zulfon Me Kho Jaaon Main

4 selections sent to

My La Maritiniere class Yahoogroup 5/14/2006

This collection on Dosti, assembled and emailed by me,
from where I culled the key sher puts the Sherila Sher in the right context

Aarzoo hai door se dekhne ki
Kareeb aana bhi nahi chahte
Tamanna nahi tumhe pane ki
Magar khona bhi nahi chahte

Dil ki aawaj ko ikarar kahate hai
Jhuki nighaho ko izhar kahate hai
Khuch pane ka naam hi pyar nahi hota
Kuch khone ko bhi pyar kahate hai

Koi ankhon se baat ker leta hai,
koi ankhon me mulakat ker leta hai,
bada mushkil hota hai jawab dena
jab koi khamosh rehker saval ker leta hai

Zindagi udas hone ka naam nahi,
Dosti sirf paas hone ka naam nahi,
Agar tum dur rehkar bhi hamhe yad karo,
is se bada hamare liye koi inam nahi

Ibtadaae Ishq Hai ???   Janab MIR TAQI MIR

Mir saheb (in the verse below) farmate hain ki

"abhi to ibtada e ishq hai"              [ibtada - shuruat]

Do baras beet gaye aur abhi to ishq ki ibtadaa hi nahi hui

par in do barso mein ishq ke zulm hamne saare sahe

Dooriyan aur nazdeekiyan ke sitam saare sahe

Hukumat e Amriki (USCIS) ke sitam bhi saare sahe

Bibi-e- mashooq ke bahaney saare sahe

itna hi nahi, vakil ke bahaney bhi saare sahe

ishq ke daayeren me rehkar ishq ke andaz saare sahe

aur aakhir mein saat samundar paar rehke

(long distance) ishq ke zulm to sahe hi sahe

ab to janaab bas itna hi arz kar sakte hain

hamen to yeh nahin pata ki kya hai sahi aur kya hai sahe !

Aage padhte hain to:

Mir Sahab likhte hain "Sabz hoti hi nahi yeh sar zamin"

Sar zameen to Sabz hui hain lekin

Hamari to dastaan mein Sabz Bagh hi likhe hain

Mir saheb farmate hain

Ibtadaae ishq hai rota hai kya,
Aage aage dekhiye hota hai kya

rone se hamne seekha hai kya

roke kabhi kuch mila hai kya

[ Sabz Bagh  unattainable promises ]

Ibtadaae ishq hai rota hai kya,
Aage aage dekhiye hota hai kya.

Qafile mein subah ke ek shor hai,
Yaani ghaafil ham chale sota hai kya.

Sabz hoti hi nahin yeh sar zamin,
Tukhm-e-khwahish dil mein tu bota hai kya.

                       Yeh nishaan-e-ishq hain jaate nahin,
Daagh chhaati ke abas dhota hai kya.

                       Ghairat-e-Yousaf hai yeh waqt-e-aziz,
Mir isko raigaan khota hai kya.

Mir Ishq Hai Kya?

Kya kahun tum se main ke kya hai ishq,
Jaan ka rog hai, bala hai ishq.

Ishq hi ishq hai jahaan dekho,
Saare aalam mein bhar raha hai ishq.

Ishq maashuq ishq aashiq hai,
Yaani apna hi mubtala hai ishq.

Ishq hai tarz-o-taur ishq ke taeen,
Kahin banda kahin Khuda hai ishq.

Kaun maqsad ko ishq bin pohuncha,
Aarzoo ishq wa mudda hai ishq.

Koi khwaahan nahin mahabbat ka,
Tu kahe jins-e-narawa hai ishq.

Mir ji zarad hote jaate hain,
Kya kahin tum ne bhi kiya hai ishq?

miir ke sher kaa ahvaal kahuuN kyaa Ghaalib
jis kaa diivaan kam az-gulshan-e kashmiir nahiiN

About Mir's verse, what can i say Ghalib

His Divan is not less than the garden of Kashmir

Gaalib apnaa yih aqiidah hai bah qaul-e naasikh
aap be-bahrah hai jo mutaqid-e miir nahiiN

1) Ghalib, this is my creed/belief, in the words of Nasikh
2) [he] himself is {destitute / cut off}, who [is] not a {believer in / follower of} Mir

be-bahrah: 'Having no share, part, or lot (in), without portion or profit; destitute, unfortunate'.

bhuuNte haiN dil ik jaanib sikte haiN jigar yak suu
hai mahfil-e mushtaaqaaN dukkaan kabaabii kii

[To one side, they roast a heart; elsewhere, they grill a liver
The gathering of the ardent ones is a kabob-seller's shop]

rekhte ke tumhiiN ustaad nahiiN ho ;Ghaalib
kahte haiN agle zamaane meiN koii Mir bhii thaa

1) you are not the only Ustad of Rekhtah, Ghalib
2) they say that in an earlier age there was some Mir/master as well

miir: 'Chief, leader, master, head'.

In a typically complex way, Ghalib pays tribute to Mir, the only other Ustad he feels worthy of comparison to himself. He relegates all other Urdu poets to forgettability.

And even toward Mir, his compliment is understated, to put it politely. Actually, it's more like backhanded.  'they say' (but of course it's hard to tell about these rumors) that 'in an earlier age'  there was 'some' Mir (at least, that was said to be his name). And of course 'Mir' is not only a pen name but also a word (miir), so the reference might even be construed as applying to any great predecessor.

Simple yet effective couplet

gumshuda tanhaiyon ki dastaan achhi to ho
main yahan achha nahi hoon, tum waha achhi to ho

aa))ii bahaar gulshan gul se bharaa hai lekin
har goshah-e chaman me;N khaalii hai jaa-e bulbul               --------         Mir Taqi Mir

[spring has come; the garden is full of roses, but
in every corner of the garden, the  nightingale's  place is empty].

kahte ho yih kahte ham yih kahte jo yaar aataa
sab kahne kii baate;N hai;N kuchh bhii nah kahaa jaataa

/You say, 'we'd say this, we'd say this if the beloved came'
these are all mere words; nothing {is/ can be} said/....

Mir improves on the above

kahte to ho yuu;N kahte yuu;N kahte jo vuh aataa
yih kahne kii baate;N hai;N kuchh bhii nah kahaa jaataa

[you say, 'we'd say thus, we'd say thus if she came
these are just words; nothing {is / can be} said].

Be-dil

Ahmed Faraz, 57, a leading progressive Pakistani Urdu poet from Kohat, NWFP,  visited the mazar [tomb] of his favourite Persian poet, " Bedil", (d 1700) called Baag-e-Bedil in Delhi.
Here is a touching report on the web site www.Urdu Poetry.com

" -- He bends to touch the grave as if he needs to physically establish a bond he had cherished for so long in his heart. The graveyard is peaceful, shady under neem and mango trees . A koel is cooing in anticipating the mango blossom. Sitting on a stone bench he recites a couplet from Bedil in Persian:

" Bedil az kulfat-e-shikast

mun’aal Bazm-e-hasti dukaan-e-shisagar ast."

Bedil weep not for your losses, this party that is life, is after all held in a glassmaker’s shop. "

Faraz Sahib is the poet of the ghazal made famous by Mehdi Hassan:

Ranjish hi sahi, dil hi dukhaane ke liye  . . .

Tajik Prez visit: Mirza Bedil's tomb in Delhi gets face-lift

All of a sudden the dilapidated tomb of Mirza Abdul Qadir Bedil, the great Persian poet, who was born in Patna, is getting a face-lift. The officials are busy sprucing up the structure and plaques would be put up about the poet.

Incidentally, Bedil is very popular in Central Asia rather than India, where he was born and died. However, the upcoming visit of Emomali Rahmanov the Tajikistan President on Aug 6 has prompted officials into action.

Rahmanov had expressed his wish to visit Bagh-e-Bedil on Mathura Road. Ghalib drew heavily from Bedil.
Ghalib's couplet

'tarz-e-bedil meN reKhta kahnaa

/asadullah khaN qayaamat hai'

some more on BE-DIL and BE-DILI

Shamma kyun hai bedil ye uski kya adaa hai
Wo ahl-e-khalq kya jaane ye dil kyun gham-zada hai

Hum saagar-e-gham me na kyun khud ko duboyen
Jaana yahi ayyam ye manzoor-e-khuda hai

Kya shams-o-qamar ne nahi dekha mera aalam
Ya rab tere is dar pe ab yehi meri sada hai

Jab ishq yun ghaafil hua phir roye kyun Zafar
Kaafir ke chashm-e-mast pe ye dil kyun fida hai

Ab jaayen to kidhar ya khuda tu hi ye bata

Ghalib Ka Andaz e Bayaan . . . . .

Ghalib farmate hain

Ishq ne hame nikammah kar diya

varna aadmi ham bhi the kaam ke

hame to ishq ne nikammah se shayar bana diya

Aur Ummeed ka sehra hamare sar pe pehna diya!

Ghalib farmate hain

Ghalib ki Goim Mushkil

" mushkil hain zabas kalaam mera ai dil,
sun sun ke ise sukhanwaraan-e-kaamil,
aasaan kahne ki karte hain farmaish   ,
goim mushkil wa gar na goim mushkil. "

Too hard to grasp is my verse, O heart!
Hearing it, the connoisseurs of art
For a simpler style do ask.

Laheren ki tarah yaadein

Laher aati hai Kinare se palat jaati hai,
Yaad aati hai dil main simat jati hai,
Laher aur yaad main faraq sirf itna hai,
Lehar bewaqt aur yaad har waqt aati hai!

Gumnaam Raatein

Raatein gumnaam hoti hai,
Din kisike naam hota hai,
Hum zindagi kuch is tarah jeete hai,
Ki har lamha aapke hi naam hota hai !

Yaad Aaye To Kya Karoon

Reh reh ke teri yaad aye to kiya karoon?
Yaad teri dil se na jaye to kiya karoon?
Sochte hai ke hogi mulakat khwaabo mein
agar neend hee na ayi to kya karoon?

Ulfat ka paighaam sabhi laate

Kabhi aate, kabhi jaate

Dil ke kaagaz par unka naam

Kabhi likte, kabhi mitaate

Kabhi tadapte, kabhi lubhaate

Raqeeb

The concept of Raqeeb in Urdu poetry is unique. Raqeeb is one's rival in love, the person who is also in love with your beloved. It is a strange relationship with several emotions and elements involved but this particular poem 'Raqueeb se' is different.

Here the poet looks at Raqeeb with the nostalgia and remembers the raqeeb for also loving his beloved, competing with him for the same love, sharing the same emotion and addressing him as a person who alone can understand his plight and passion.

'aa ki vaabasta hai us husn ki yaadeN tujhse
jisne is dil ko pariikhaana bana rakhaa thaa
jiski ulfat meN bhulaa rakhii thii dunia hamne

tuu ne dekhi hai voh peshaani, voh ruKhsaar, voh honT
zindgi jinke tasavvur meN luTaa dii hamne
tujh pe uThi haiN voh kho'ii kho'ii saahir aankheN
tujhko maa'luum hai kyoN umr ganvaa dii hamne

(Faiz Ahmed Faiz’ verse ‘Raqib Se’)

Fani Badayuni  Poet of sorrow

The element of sorrow shines through the poetry of Fani Badauni. No poet wrote as much about meloncholy and with such intensity as Fani

Aapse Milke Ham

Aapse milke ham kuchh badal se gaye
sher padhne
(aur likhne!) lage gungunaane lage
Pehle mashhoor thi apni sanjeedgi
ab to jab dekhiye muskaraane lage

milne julne lage aane jaane lage
[Mehfil aaraai = mehfil sajaana]

Ham ne jab aapki dekhi dilchaspiyaan
aa gayi chand ham mein bhi tabdiliyaan
Ek Mussavvir se bhi ho gayi dosti
(
well tasvir banana kuch mand aur band ho gaya)
aur ghazalein bhi sunne sunaane lage.   [Tabdiliyaan= changes] [Musavvir= artist, painter]

Aap ke baare mein poochh baitha koi
kyaa kahein hamse kyaa badhawaasi huyi.
Kehne waali jo thi baat wo na kahi
baat jo thi chhupaani bataaane lage
          [Badhawaasi= confusion]

Ishq bedar kare ishq beghar kare
ishq ka such hai koi thikaanaa nahin
Ham jo kaltak thikaane ke the aadmi
aapse milke kaise thikaane lage.

The first thikaana means = reliability. So ishq ka (such hai) koi thikaanaa nahin means Love is (really) not reliable.

Second Thikaana is the usual meaning ie, a fixed place, residence, position, , employment.

Third usage is an idiom, Thikaana lagnaa means it means to get terminated, it is used both in a positive sense and a negative sense…eg, ab jaake thikaane laga…here it means now he got the success) but in this sher it is used in a negative sense,

The Last Legend

I tuned in to the BBC urdu service yesterday morning and heard the news 'legendary Urdu poet Ahmad Nadeem Qasmi is no more'.
kaun kahtaa hai ki maut aaii to mar jaauuNgaa
maiN to daryaa huuN samandar meN utar jaauuNga
--Nadeem

You can listen this ghazal in Qasmi's own voice on http://mushaira.org/ppage.php?poet_name=Ahmed+Nadeem+Qasmi

He was the last of the legends of Urdu literature who were born in the first quarter of the last century. I don't think any such era in any other language would have seen such a galaxy of poets and authors who were so popular with masses. Literature was no longer confined to a certain class.

Majaz, Faiz, Jazbi, Makhdum, Akhtarul Iman, Sardar Jafri, Kaifi, Majrooh, Jaanisaar and scores of others had appeared on the scene in the 30s. Poets like Josh, Firaq and Jigar were a toast of the nation. The classical masters like Seemab, Yagana Changezi, Safi Lucknowi, Hasrat Mohani, Jamil Mazhari and Asghar were all at their creative best. And Iqbal's poetry echoed everywhere.

Ahmed Nadeem Qasmi (1916-2006) was almost 90 and had a creative life of seven decades. Intezaar Husain rightly said, 'He was the last of the great personalities that emerged during Progressive Writers' Movement and now there is no one in the Urdu worold anywhere near his stature'. 'Ehtaraam, ehtaraam, ehtaraam...Ahmed Nadim Qasmi bazm meN tashriif laa rahe hain' that was how Fikr Taunsvi had once described his personality.

maiN kab se gosh-bar-aavaaz huuN pukaaro bhii
zamiiN pe sitaare kabhii utaaro bhii

meri Ghayyuur umangoN shabaab faani hai
Ghuruur-e-ishq ka deriina khel haaro bhii

bhatak rahaa hai dhundhalkoN meN karvaan-e-khayaal
bas ab Khudaa ke liye kakuleN saNvaroo bhii

For the ghazal 'saaNs lenaa bhi sazaa lagta hai..

Abid came out with a satire Akbar Ilahabadi had penned to lampoon the Raja of Mahmoodabad who had been supporting the Congress for many years but was veering towards the Muslim League which was gaining strength among Muslims of Uttar Pradesh:

Muzakkar ‘He’ ko kehtey hain

Muannas ‘She’ ko kehtey hain

Voh ek marde-e-Mukhannas hain

Na ‘heeon’ main na ‘sheeon’ mein

(The masculine gender is a He

The feminine gender is a She

But he is of a neuter gender

Neither among the he’s nor among the Shias)

Mahmoodabad Raja Sahib was a Shia.

Akbar Ilahabadi had made a dig at Sarojini Naidu. She came to him to solicit his support for the Home Rule League. Akbar was more inclined towards supporting the Muslim League. He told her in verse:

Shama Khud ban jaee gee

Mome to mangvaaeye

Rule main haazir karoonga

Home to dikhlaaye

( The candle will form itself

Get some wax at first

I will get you the rule you want

But show me the home at first).

Singular success

Sunil Dutt made a film Yaadein in which he was the sole actor. It did very poorly at the box office. Once one of his fans met him and said, "Wah Dutt Sahib, What a wonderful film you made! There was only you on the screen and there was only myself in the audience."
