The Louth Minor Football Board got the Damian Reid Regional Competitions for 2012 off to a good start on Friday night when North got the better of East/West by just two points in the Turlough Lennon Cup. . The first ten minutes was evenly contested with North just holding the edge with scores from Dean Maguire and Vincent McKee while Conor Lenehan replied for East/West. Dean Matthews and Andrew Kierans were narrowly wide with their efforts and Gavan Gaffey was unlucky with his shot for North. The highlight of the opening period was a superb save by Niall Carrie from Dean Maguire.

North were a better team for the next ten minutes and they extended their lead to five points with scores from Gavan Gaffey following a good Peter Thornton pass, Vincent McKee provided the pass for Jordan O’Donoghue, Dean Maguire cut in from the wing and fisted over and Gavan Gaffey won possession from a forth five metre kick and sent over the bar. Steven Bellew, Niall Mulholland, james Loughran and Dara Hamill won clean possession and the forwards moved well for their first game together.

It was a different game for the final ten minutes of the half, the East/West backs got a grip on the skilful North forwards and with Mitchell Keenan, Cormac Callan, Andrew Kieran, Kevin Gallagher and Emmet Kirk winning good ball scoring opportunities were created. Conor Walsh got their second score and Dean Matthews benefitted from good work by Mitchell Keenan when he hit a great goal and when he followed up with a point they had hit the front as half time approached.

The early period of the second half was like the first with North going ahead, Dara Hamill converted a free and Vincent McKee was also on target, Dean Maguire slipped the defence and he got the all important goal and Eoin Farrell completed their tally. Craig Doherty got a goal and a point for East/West to narrow the gap to two points and this was how it finished with North just deserving their win in what turned out to be a closely contested fixture.

Managers Padraig Hamill and Declan Larney did a good job with their players in this contest and watching Louth Under 16 selectors Declan Byrne and Tony Doherty will have spotted a few new players. North return to Darver next Friday 16th March to take on South and South meet East/West on 23rd with the final on Friday 30th March.
