This was a dramatic 2A Minor League Final. Naomh Mairtin were totally dominant for the first half and should have had the game wrapped up by half time, they stretched the lead with two points on the resumption and then they faded as the O’Mahony’s came storming into the game. There was just a goal between them when O’Mahony’s goaled on fifty two minutes but the Naomh Mairtin reply was quick and decisive two minutes later when they got their third and the killer goal and they stretched the lead to seven points again with a free. But O’Mahony’s young side laid siege to the Martin’s goal in the last six minutes and scored 1 – 3. They had the last kick of the match a free but it came off the upright and was cleared.

Naomh Mairtin’s early dominance sprung from their mid field of Cormac Brodigan and Conor Smyth and their forwards combined brilliantly to carve their way through the O’Mahony’s defence and set up the scores for Rory Brodigan who scored 2 – 2 in the first half and 3 – 4 in all.

Conor Smyth set up Karl Martin for a point on the resumption and the elusive Rory Brodigan cancelled out a Ben McLoughlin score. Jonathan Connolly set up Stephen Kilcoyne for a goal and Stephen then reduced the deficit to a goal on forty three minutes. But it was then that Naomh Mairtin realising their predicament produced one of their best moves and it finished with a third goal for Rory Brodigan after terrific work by Wayne Campbell and Karl Martin.

It was a killer for Sean O’Mahony’s but this young side is made of stern stuff and they continued to carry the game to Naomh Mairtin.  Ben McLoughlin converted a free but Rory Brodigan and Wayne Campbell stretched the lead to seven points again with six minutes left. Ben McLoughlin with two more frees and Jonathan Connolly reduced the lead to four points and when Ryan O’Hanlon hit the back of the net after good Paddy Byrne work there was huge tension. O’Mahony’s came in search of the equaliser and they won a free, the angle was tight and Ben McLoughlin’s effort came  back off the post, dropped in front of the goal and was cleared.

Naomh Mairtin were the stronger side and deserved their win but this was a comeback of monumental proportions by O’Mahony’s. Liam Clarke was outstanding in goals, Michael Crawley, Robbie Williams, Conor McKeown, Stephen Kilcoyne, Ben McLoughlin and Jonathan Connolly were very good.

Brendan Carthy presented the 2A League trophy to winning captain Conor Smyth.
