Gingerbread House Cookies

Makes about 4 dozen cookies


3/4 c. butter, softened

1 c. sugar

1 c. molasses

1/4 c. sour cream

1 egg

4 c. flour

1 tsp. salt

1-1/2 tsp. baking powder

1/2 tsp. baking soda

2 tsp. cinnamon

2 tsp. cloves

2 tsp. ginger

1 tsp. nutmeg


Whisk together dry ingredients and set aside. Cream together butter and sugar. Add molasses, sour cream and egg; beat until well blended. Gradually add dry ingredients in about 3 additions. Cover and chill at least 1 hour.


Roll out dough between two sheets of wax paper. Use a cookie cutter to cut out house shapes or create your own. Line cookie sheet with parchment paper. Place cookies 2 inches apart. Bake at 350 for about 10 minutes. Allow to cool on wire racks. Frost with brown royal icing and allow to harden before decorating with candies, as desired.
