Spelling and Phonics

Having grown up in a community where low literacy skills and the resultant disadvantages were common, I have had a life-long passion for literacy.  My own teaching techniques are based on the premises that:
  • if you can't decode efficiently, then reading print is very difficult;
  • one of the most crucial tools for decoding & encoding is phonics, without which students are severely hampered;
  • if you stop at phonics alone, you will never become a truly competent reader and writer.
