Tips for Students

As you enter the 5th and 6th grade, the responsibility to complete and succeed in your academic work begins to be placed on you! Oakwood students are encouraged to take pride in your work and do your absolute best on every assignment.

Here are some tips to help you become more successful inside the classroom:

  • Get a good night's sleep. Set a bedtime! Though it may sound lame or childish, you should plan a time to go to bed. When a you are fully rested, it is easier to stay on task and have energy to complete the school day to the absolute best of your ability.
  • Eat a well-balanced breakfast. In order to focus on school work, you need to consume a meal before starting the school day. Having a full stomach will help you start their day off right!
  • You should learn to set academic goals and how to establish a plan to accomplish those goals. Just like setting an athletic goal, an academic goal will help keep you accountable for your school work and teach you to be proud of the grades you earn. You should set a letter goal for each class and talk with parents, teachers and other people in your support system about how to accomplish these goals on a daily basis.
  • You should learn to work in groups, especially with classmates you do not interact with on a daily basis. It is vital for you to learn to work with others in order to be successful in later grades and in life.
  • You should always be productive during Success! Instead of simply staring off into space or playing games, you should actively be working on incomplete assignments or homework during Success. This time in the day is a great opportunity to ask questions about topics that are unclear. If you have completed all of their work,  you should read during Success.
  • READ! Read as often and as much as possible! When school assignments or other work is completed, you should always have a book to read. It is important for you to begin reading often at an early age. Find a genre you enjoy and escape reality!
  • Be positive! It is important for you to be a positive influence inside the classroom. You should aim to be leaders and inspire other students to be the best they can be!
