About Me

Subhra Sankar Dhar is a Professor in Statistics in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the IIT Kanpur, India since January, 2023. Previously, at the same place, he was an Associate Professor in Statistics (from November, 2018 to December, 2022) and an Assistant Professor in Statistics (from July, 2013 to October, 2018). He received PhD in Statistics from Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata in March, 2012 under supervision of Professor Probal Chaudhuri. He works on Non-parametric Methods and related topics in Statistics/Applied Probability/Econometrics.  As of now, he is an author of 24 journal articles (including 2 in Bernoulli (2023, 2014), 2 in Teoriya Veroyatnosteĭ i Matematicheskaya Statistika (AMS) (2024, 2022), 3 in Scandinavian Journal of Statistics (2020, 2018, 2016), 1 in Annals of the Institute of Statistical Mathematics (2021), 1 in Electronic Journal of Statistics (2016), 1 in Statistica Sinica (2012), 1 in IEEE Transaction on Signal Processing (2019) and 1 in Scientific Reports (Nature) (2022)) and 9 book chapters. He has already supervised 5 PhD theses (2 completed and 3 in progress). 


As the PI, he received external research grants including Core Research Grant (2023-2026), MATRICS Research Grant (2020-23) from the Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB), Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. Moreover, he is also presently the principal modeller (equivalent to PI from IIT Kanpur) of RSV from IIT Kanpur in National Disease Modelling Consortium (NDMC) (https://www.ndmconsortium.com) under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the Government of India anchored at IIT Bombay, funded by Bill Gates & Melinda Gates Foundation, USA (https://www.gatesfoundation.org/). 


He has been a visiting researcher at many places including London School of Economics and Political Science, England (2014, 2016, 2018), Michigan State University, USA (2015), Ruhr University, Germany (2017-2018), KU Leuven, Belgium (2018) and Tsinghua  University, China (2023).  


He is a recipient of Prof. CR Rao National Award in Statistics  awarded by the Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation, Government of India in 2019 and P K Kelkar Research Fellowship by the IIT Kanpur for a period of three years in 2020 as recognition of excellent professional contributions at IIT Kanpur. Presently he serves as an Associate Editor of Sankhya, Series A.


Since October 1, 2024, he has been a vice chairman for GATE/JAM-2025 at the IIT Kanpur.
