Woodland Adventure

Part 2

Carrying on from Part 1, my assistant is still desperately trying to reverse her car back up the slope. I watch her spin for a while and then ‘help’ by pulling on the door pillar whilst constantly filming her legs working the clutch up and down. She struggles to get the hang of ‘rocking’ the car to try and get up and over the hump at the back of the rut, resulting in her eventually allowing the car to run a fraction forward, so that it is further down the hill!

She realises that she is completely stuck and needs to try something different and so then drives forward and turns in a huge big circle. It is a risky manoeuvre but surprisingly she makes it. However, luckily she stops further up the slope to wait for me, rather than making use of her forward momentum to drive straight back up to the road.

I ask her to move the car further up so that I can take another photo of the clearing without her car in the shot. Oh dear, she cannot move. The grass is still very wet and she has stopped right in the middle of a very muddy piece. She still has over 100 metres of slope to try and get up.

Watch as she spins and spins, gradually revving the engine more and more in her desperation to escape.

Part 1

I needed to check out a clearing in the middle of a wood to see if it was a likely place for an illegal encampment. My assistant came with me and she drove her own car. When we got to the clearing, she was quite happy to drive across the grass, which gradually sloped downhill away from the track. The further we went, the steeper the slope got! She stopped pretty near the bottom, but without going down the last really steep slope. Once I had taken the photographs that I needed for my report, I suggested that she reverse back up the slope, as the ground looked to be a bit boggy further down the slope in front of us.

She tried but just span her wheels. To start with I was inside the car with her and was able to capture her initial reaction to being stuck for the first time ever! She struggled and struggled to reverse for the next few minutes. I managed to keep the video camera rolling the whole time!

At no time did she question me as to why I was continually filming her, probably because I was constantly talking to her trying to give her advice on how best to get unstuck! This included a quick lesson concerning how to rock the car, to try and get it back up out of a rut. She probably also accepted it because she knew I suffered from back pain and would therefore not expect me to be in a position to push very much! That suited me, as I was then able to concentrate on filming her. I pretended that I was just carrying the video camera around as I looked at what she had got her car into. I kept on threatening to take photos of her and she did not mind. In actual fact I was just letting the camera run and filming the whole time!

She made quite a few comments whilst trying to get unstuck - I won’t spoil it by telling what they were!

Look out for Part 2 – where she eventually gets the car facing the right way back up the slope, but can she make it?
