Total Body Modification

What Is T.B.M.?

T.B.M. (Total Body Modification) is a technique that is used to find the organ, system, or area of the body that is stressed, determine why it is stressed and then correct the problem by restoring balance to the nervous system and there for one's health and well being.

In other words, while basic Chiropractic is used to correct the Structure and influence the function, T.B.M. corrects the Functional Physiology (how the body works) which may, in turn, influence structure. Both are essential to optimum health.

In the early days of Chiropractic, the "old time Chiropractor" was not restricted or confused by "scientific proof" of what they were able to do. These old masters found a problem and corrected it, thereby building the reputation of Chiropractic with their main philosophy being that the power that made the body, could correct the body.

T.B.M. has taken that philosophy and explored the possibilities inherent in the human body of self-regeneration. T.B.M. has demonstrated that if the right thing is done to the body at the right time and in the right way, miracles can happen. By taking the techniques of the old Chiropractic masters and combining them with modern technology, T.B.M. has been able to duplicate the corrections and restoration to health that the old masters were able to do.

How Does Total Body Modification Work?

The nervous system is composed of the Central Nervous System, which runs the voluntary function or movements and the Autonomic Nervous System, which runs the involuntary functions of the body, such as heart beat, digestion, etc. Each of these systems are further divided into Sensory and
Motor Fibers.

The brain is the primary control for both branches of the nervous system. Sensory fibers carry messages to the brain where they are processed like a computer, and the brain in turn, tells the body what to do.

Research has proved that under sufficient stress, from any reason, the neurons in the brain centers which are controlling the stressed organ or body part essentially depolarize. This is like blowing a fuse on an electrical circuit. The message gets to the brain but fails to return. The result is that the brain (computer) loses effective control over the afflicted organ or body part. This leaves the organ or body part running out of control.

Using tried and tested reflex points and Applied Kinesiology (muscle-reflex testing), the T.B.M. practitioner can find the problem. The practitioner will then stimulate a specific area or areas of the spine in a specific manner and sequence in an attempt to stimulate the neurons of the brain to repolarize (fix the fuse) and allow the brain to regain control of the body and guide it back to health. Since a correctly functioning nervous system is a major requirement for health, it follows that T.B.M. can have a part to play in almost any problem and uncover and correct the roadblocks to recovery.

Using T.B.M. techniques realigns the functions and interactions within the body and systems.

What is the History of TBM?

Total Body Modification, or TBM, was developed by the late Dr’s. Victor L Frank, D.C. & C. Harold Havlic, D.C. based upon the work of Dr. Robert  Riddler, D.C.  As the work began with Chiropractors who had studied AK (Applied Kinesiology), they brought to TBM the same concepts upon which Chiropractics is founded – “The Power that Made the Body can Heal the Body” & “As doctors and practitioners, we have never healed anything.  We only remove Roadblocks to allow the body to do its own healing.”

TBM is based on the idea that when an organ is stressed, related neurons in the brain are depolarized, similar to the concept of when a fuse blows in an electronic device or in your home.  The TBM practitioner uses Applied Kinesiology (muscle reflex-testing) to locate the problem, and then stimulates the spine in the related areas in order to repolarize the neurons, and thus return the central nervous system to optimum functioning.  This stimulation restores communication to and from the central nervous system and the organs involved.  The effect is that the central nervous system then sends a message to the body to self-correct, in a “language” the body understands.

TBM practitioners use simple reflex-points (some adapted from acupuncture/acupressure points) and then test an indicator muscle to determine if a correction is needed for the body organ, system, gland, or other function being tested.  If too much energy, or not enough energy is being supplied to the organ, system, or function being tested, a simple correction is made in order to re-engage the bodies communication with that part and allow the body to heal itself.

Chiropractic practitioners of TBM are taught both spinal manipulations as well as non-manipulative maneuvers that create these corrections in communication.  Non-Chiropractic TBM practitioners are not licensed to make spinal manipulations so all of their corrections are subtle, energetic, soft-tissue corrections, but are equally effective.

The first goal of TBM is to get the body returned to a state of homeostasis, where there is a balance between the functioning of the sympathetic nervous system and the parasympathetic nervous system.  Our bodies cannot, and will not heal themselves when they are not in a parasympathetic state.  Therefore, balance of these systems is vital to the process of health and healing.  In order to do this, TBM practitioners first work with the patient/client in following particular nutritional protocols that provide (1) the proper amounts of water needed by the body and (2) the support needed for the body to regain balance through the Autonomic System Recovery program.

Along the way, the TBM practitioner has various exams that he conducts, and corrections he makes, in order to turn a person's body back on and ensure the functioning of the organs, systems, glands, and bodily functions.  This allows the body to once again function as it was intended to, thus allowing a person's body to heal itself.
