Further Reflection Activities

Now that you have developed your strategic plan, try these additional reflection activities:

Elevator Speech

What is your council all about? What does your council do? People are sure to ask members of your Board questions like these. It is useful to have an answer that all of you are familiar with. This activity is called "The Elevator Speech" because you need to imagine you have the time you might have between when the doors of the elevator close and the time they open and you part ways - in other words, a short, succinct answer. The website Mindtools describes an elevator speech as, "a brief, persuasive speech that you use to spark interest in what your organization does." Develop 3-4 sentences that you can share that gives a clear picture of who you are and what you do.

Spending Your Values

1. Take a look at your budget (or better yet a copy of your expenses for the year).

2. List the 5-6 things on which you plan to spend/spent the most money during the year.

3. Now take a look at the list of values you developed as part of your strategic plan. Compare your values with the areas in which you are spending the most money. How does your spending reflect your values? In what ways might you consider reworking your budget to better match your values?
