Since October 1, 2013 you can apply and enroll through the Health Insurance Marketplace. Health coverage starts as early as January 1, 2014, and open enrollment ends on March 31, 2014. After open enrollment ends on March 31, 2014, you won't be able to get health coverage through the Marketplace until the next annual enrollment period, unless you have a qualifying life event. The Marketplace is a new way to find health coverage that fits your budget and meets your needs. With one application, you can see all your options and enroll. Every health insurance plan in the new Marketplace will offer essential health benefits, doctor visits, preventive carincluding e, hospitalization, prescriptions, and more. You can compare plans based on price, benefits, quality, and other features important to you before you make a choice.
Insurance plans in the Marketplace are offered by private companies, and they cover the same core set of essential health benefits. No matter where you live, you’ll be able to compare your health insurance options in the Marketplace and find a health plan that meets your needs and fits your budget. There will also be new protections for you and your family. Health insurance companies can’t deny you coverage or charge you more due to pre-existing health conditions, and they can’t charge women and men different premiums. Read the full-text of the Law
The law requires individuals to obtain coverage if they don't already have it as of Jan. 1, but nine categories of people are exempt, according to a fact sheet from the Department of Health and Human Services.
If you live in Florida, you’ll use this website, www.HealthCare.gov, to apply for coverage, compare plans, and enroll.
You can apply for marketplace coverage three ways: online, by email, or in person with the help of a Navigator or other qualified helper.
