Confirmation is a public rite of the church preceded by a period of instruction designed to help baptized Christians identify with the life and mission of the Christian community. Students enter into the process to learn more about the faith into which their parents had them baptized. Parents are an important component of this next step of faith.

The confirmation process is primarily a two year program here at St. Paul, starting in 6th grade and ending with Confirmation in October of the 8th grade year. Students are instructed and prepared to receive Holy Communion in the spring of the 5th grade year.  This instruction is only the beginning of the confirmation process.

For those students enrolled in Lutheran Unity school, confirmation is taught as part of the regular religion class.  All students who attend Lutheran Unity School will take these classes, but those who wish to be confirmed MUST complete the extra set of requirements listed below.

For those students not attending Lutheran Unity school, confirmation is taught on Wednesday at 5-6:30pm.  We follow the Chicago Public School calendar for breaks.

Materials Needed for Confirmation

  • The Holy Bible (NIV Translation) - It is suggested that students invest in the Lutheran Study Bible or Concordia Self Study Bible.  You can order them at www.cph.org.
  • Luther's Small Catechism with Explanation (2001 edition)

The Adult Confirmation Experience

When an adult feels led by God to become part of our fellowship at St. Paul Lutheran Church, we ask that they participate in the God For Us Class that meets at various times during the year.

God For Us is a ten-week encounter with the basic teachings of Christianity as understood by Lutheran believers. During the course of the ten weeks we address such fundamental issues as the existence of God, who Jesus is, what it means be to be a Christian on a daily basis, why is there evil and suffering in the world, why are there differences among Christians, etc. We try to touch on a lot of topics in order to see what God has to say to each of us as His people.

God For Us is a class that anyone can take. People who wish to join the congregation are required to take this class, but it’s not limited to new members. Anyone simply wanting to review the basic teachings of the faith are welcome to attend.

If you are interested in joining such a class and wish to find out the schedule, please contact the Church Office at 708 867-5044.
