Stop Motion Art Therapy:
Animated Transformation and Healing
"Stop acting so small. You are the universe in ecstatic motion." -Rumi
Stop motion is an animation technique that combines a series of photographs to create a continuous, flipbook-like, sequence. This process is perfect for exploring the themes of growth, transformation, and the power of small shifts. Shawn McNiff writes that, "stuckness is an absence of movement and the inability to perceive motion in the moment." Stop motion film making requires the creator to slow down, consider the importance of each moment of the story, and allow the layers of morphing imagery to feel active and full of possibility. This expressive art technique reminds us to be mindful and present in our own lives. We are challenged to become more attuned with ourselves, to nurture our dreams and imagination, and to reconnect with the natural world. During our workshops we create group stop motion movies and reflect on our efforts to tolerate change. We will examine our ability to honor our encounters with both joy and chaos in order to gain insight and appreciation for the larger moving picture and story of our lives.

Saturday November 8, 2014 10:00-1:00pm Executive Conference Center - Saturday 1601 Broadway (enter on 48th Street) Multimodal Stop Motion Filmmaking: Mindfulness, Collaboration, Connection & Empowerment Stop motion animation combines a series of photographs to create a continuous sequence of moving images. This process is perfect for exploring the themes of impermanence, transformation, and the power of incremental shifts. Stop motion animation can be used with individuals and groups as a mindfulness art therapy technique, and to gain perspective of an overall narrative. The creation of the animated film uniquely kick-starts a work of art into motion while simultaneously slowing down the process moment-to-moment. This three-hour workshop will use a multimodal approach that includes guided imagery meditation, individual and group art-making, music, and movement. Participants will engage in hands-on cooperative filmmaking, while gaining both technical skills and creative inspiration for future applications. It will conclude with a discussion regarding the benefits, limitations, and ethical considerations of using this approach with clients. Participants will leave with a completed, collaborative digital film that embodies healing, empowerment, and connection.
