Appeal for Chairs

St Mary's church has been the most prominent building in the centre of Bridgwater since medieval times.  It was last re-furbished in Victorian times.   For some considerable time now, the Vicar and congregation have been aware that major work was needed to bring the church heating and electrical systems up to modern standards and to make the church a more accessible place.  It has long been our  'Vision' for the church to be at the heart of the community.

With this in mind, and after a very long and arduous consent process, work on our re-ordering project started in May 2016 being completed in June 2017. In addition to the new heating and lighting systems,  and in order to create a flexible space for events to take place, most of the Victorian pews have been removed from the church. The remainder have been renovated, and placed on mobile platforms.  A new floor has been laid, it consisting of Blue Lias tiles under which will be heating pipes.  The tiles are durable and aesthetically pleasing enhancing  the appearance of the church.

This picture  is of the interior upon completion of the work. Enough pews for congregational use have been returned to the church. However the seating  needs to be augmented in order to accommodate people attending community events or large services.  We have chosen chairs for this purpose which are very similar in design and function to those which have been used for some time in St. Paul's Cathedral in London. We believe they will enhance the interior of the church as well as enabling us to make choices about seating arrangements for services and concerts. Additionally they will stack neatly away in order to allow other events to take place in the church.

Generous legacies, grants and our own fundraising have enabled us to undertake this project.   We are fortunate to have been awarded a grant of £10,000 towards the purchase of chairs and expect this to fund about 50.  We would like to be able to purchase at least 100 more, in order to be able to provide seating for everyone attending large events.

For this we will need to raise money from congregational and public donations.   We are therefore appealing for any contributions you may be able to make either to fund a whole chair or a part of a chair.

We very much hope that you will feel able to make a contribution in one or both of  these ways. It really will make a difference to the future of St. Mary's.

Details for Donors

Your donation will really make a difference to the future of St. Mary's ensuring it remains as the Bridgwater Civic church for generations to come.

Prices for chairs

The chairs are priced at £200 each, or £180 each for 2 or more.
There is also the option to pay for a chair by a monthly Banker's Order of £18 for one year, or a sum of your choice.

These prices include a small brass plaque engraved with details of your choice attached to the back of the chair.  This is a unique advertising opportunity for local businesses as the chairs will be used for all community events.
