Lowery's Lines

- Rev. Shaun Lowery, O.S.F.S. -

The gospel this weekend challenges us to look into our hearts and examine the things that cause us to sin. Jesus is very clear: if something separates us from God we need to remove it from our lives. His words are stern words of encouragement. We might hear Jesus say, “Don’t give up,” or, “Don’t quit quitting.” With whatever vices we struggle, we need to ask Jesus for the strength and the endurance to cut it out.

With the same conviction, we should also examine the things that cause us to do the works of God. Much like the disciples in today’s gospel who criticize someone outside their band acting in the name of Jesus, we may not always understand what motivates another person to do the works of God. It could be a life-changing experience or trip. It could be a personal inspiration that is received during prayer. It could also be a friendship or relationship with another person. Whatever it is, if something leads us to do the works of God, let’s hold on to it.

The Year of Mercy: Dec. 8, 2015-Nov. 2016

Pope Francis has designated the coming liturgical year (Advent through the end of Ordinary Time), as a special Year of Mercy. His hope is that we will take this time to reach out to people where they are at, particularly those isolated or hurt by the Church; that we will expand our outreach and interaction with the poor and the sick; and that we will meditate on the gift of God’s mercy to us through Jesus. I am working with the parish council on ideas for how we will observe this special year and I look forward to their ideas and energy as we work to proclaim the gospel of mercy to those who have not yet heard it, and at the same time renew ourselves in God’s abundant mercy.

Lansing Priest Convocation

I will be attending the Lansing Priest Convocation at the end of this month. All priests who serve in the diocese are invited. It’s a nice week for prayer, to hear some decent speakers, and to connect with the priests who serve our diocese so well. Please keep this event and all the priests who minister in our diocese in your prayers.

Have a blessed week. Fr. Shaun, O.S.F.S.
