Lowery's Lines

- Rev. Shaun Lowery -

Pentecost is here. We’ve arrived! Some of us may think that. It’s also Memorial Day weekend. We’ve arrived [at summer]! Recently Pope Francis ordained a group of priests and said that sometimes ordination (or commissioning of any type) are often seen as the end of a journey.

Perhaps needless to say, Pope Francis didn’t agree with that sentiment at all. When the Holy Spirit is invoked upon anyone, it is a beginning.

Pentecost is here. But we have not arrived. The gift of the Holy Spirit is one that prompts and leads us to go and announce the gospel of the Lord. We’ve only just begun.

The same can be said for the many women and men who have given their lives in service of our Nation. We remember them this weekend, and recognize that the end of conflict and violence in the world is far from eliminated because of efforts made in the past and present day. We are far from arriving at a world that seeks to utilize dialogue and non-violent means to resolve conflict. Let us pray for the eternal rest of all our Nation’s dead, and also pray for an end to war and violence in our world.
