Dear People of God

Tomorrow we celebrate formally for the first time the feast day honoring Mary as the Mother of the Church. Blessed Paul VI at the conclusion of the third session of the Second Vatican Council declared, “the Blessed Virgin Mary to be ‘Mother of the Church’, that is to say of all Christian people”.

The Scriptural basis for this title of Mary is based on John 19:25-27 which has Mary and John at the foot of the Cross. Mary is the Mother of the Church because she is the Mother of Christ who is the head of the Church. Pope Francis believes this new memorial feast will highlight the mystery of Mary’s spiritual motherhood for all of us and, therefore, the significant place she has in our spiritual lives. God bless,
