Walking Group: Murlough & Rocky Mountain (Annalong)

Our walking group had two outings last week. We enjoyed our first midweek walk at Murlough on Wednesday (10th April) and ventured up the Annalong Valley on Saturday (13th April).

Murlough was looking its best for our visit with a carpet of white anemones through the turf and the bluebells ready to burst into bloom. The sun was setting as we wandered through the dunes creating a lovely light over the sparkling sea and the first swallows slalomed across the sky. As we heading back along the beach we had it to ourselves with no-one to interrupt our view of the Mournes. A wonderful; evening to be out.

On Saturday we went to the Annalong Valley. It was a bright morning, but a cold one, especially with a sharp SE breeze. We made our way out over Round and Long Seefin. That gave us tremendous views out over the Irish Sea, especially from Round Seefin. The wind practically blew us up Rocky to the highpoint for the day. Again we had great views all around but didn’t delay as it was so cold and windy; with the wind-chill it was definitely minus several! We made our way back via the Hare’s Castle (it didn’t look like a Hare from any angle), then followed the Annalong River back down to the end of the Binnian Tunnel, and back through the forest to the start.

Our next outing is on Wednesday 24th April when we go to Clough.

This is followed by our first bus trips of the year, to the North Down Coastal Path on Saturday 27th and to Slieve Gullion in south Armagh on Saturday 11th May. Booking is essential for the bus trips – please contact Kevin McGlynn on 078 3596 0804 or kevin.mcglynn62@gmail.com if you are interested in coming along. These trips are open to non-walkers.
