Walking Group: Binevenagh

Our walking group enjoyed the final bus trip of the year with a trip to Binevenagh in the north-west. After a short walk through forest the walk open out to reveal the cliffs of Binevanagh on our right and view over Lough Foyle to Donegal on our left. We discovered an ancient stone circle and then followed across the base of the cliffs with ravens and buzzards overhead. We were delighted to meet Hannah Shields, the first the first Northern Irish woman to summit Everest and the Irish women to the North Pole. In fact we met here twice, as she was looping round in the opposite direction from us, which makes her an honorary member of our group.

We still hard the hard part ahead of us with a climb up to the summit but were rewarded with even more spectacular views as we passed back along the clifftops. And what a day for views – the Sperrins, Donegal Mountains and Inishowen Peninsulas, the wide Atlantic, Islay and Jura, Rathlin, the Causeway Coast with Kintyre behind – all spread out before us.

As if that wasn’t enough we also visited “Hells Holes” and “Mannanán Mac Lir’s” view point at Gortmore before rounding it off with a lovely lunch at the Point Bar in Magillian. A few steps further to the north and west we would have been boarding the ferry to Greencastle in Donegal. As with all the other trips, one was left with the feeling that “I’d like to go back and explore more”.
