St. John's GAC notes - W/C 2/7/18

We often get asked the questions “Why do you bother being involved in the GAA?” or “Why do you do so much for your club? Sure you get nothing in return!”

It only takes a weekend like what we have just had as a prime example of what the GAA and what St John’s GAC is all about. It’s not just a sporting organisation or a big building with football pitches on the Ballywillwill Road. It’s a community and it’s a family.

This weekend we played host to part of one of biggest weekends in the GAAs calendar, the 2018 U14 Féile. Over the weekend over 700 games were played in this tournament with over 200 teams taking part from all over Ireland and even some making the journey from as far afield as America.

On Friday afternoon our new friends from Curry GAC, Sligo arrived to stay with the boys from the U14 team for the weekend where no doubt life long friendships were formed. Thanks to all the parents who took on this task. Later that evening we hosted 8 different teams on our 2 pitches.

On Saturday morning the games began at 10am as we hosted yet another 8 teams with our outdoor cinema night taking place later that evening. On Sunday morning we travelled to Clonduff to try and progress to the final of the shield but unfortunately it wasn’t meant to be. This team worked extremely hard all weekend and they and their management are a credit to the club. You have done us all extremely proud.

A massive thanks to everyone who has worked very hard over the past days, weeks and months to make this such a success. From the organisers, carpark stewards, cleaners, BBQers, ticket sellers, officials, bar staff, tuck shop staff, grounds man, the ladies who fed and water the hundreds of people who came through our gates this weekend, the people who got the club looking top class, the list goes on.

This just shows what St. John’s is capable off. We are one off, if not the best club in Ireland and we all have to be extremely proud of what we have.

Thanks again to everyone who helped with the 2018 Féile. It will go down in history as one of the best weekends for St John’s GAC
