Eric Abbott - 1952-1953

When Roy Saunders took a leave from the band in 1952-53, Eric Abbott served as bandmaster. Eric was no stranger to the band having played in Adelaide Street band from an early age.
  • Eric was born in St. John's in 1929, the son of Major & Mrs. Robert Abbott.

  • He studied with Sister Mary Edward at the College of Our Lady of Mercy and under her guidance received his A.T.C.L. and L. T.C.L. from the Trinity College of Music in London, England in 1950 & 1951.

  • He received a Bachelor of Music and Master of Music from Acadia University and a Doctorate in Music Education from Boston University.

  • His long association with St. John's Citadel included: bandsman, bandmaster, songster leader, organist and pianist. He retired as a local officer in 1983 after twenty-nine years of service.

  • A competent composer, performer, and music teacher, Eric died suddenly on February 9, 1988. He will long be remembered for his good-natured zest for so much in life from music to motorcycles and much, much more.
