What is Counselling

Counselling and Psychotherapy

Counselling and Psychotherapy are terms which encompass a wide range of talking therapies.

Counselling and Psychotherapy differs from 'advice giving' in that the emphasis is on enabling you to draw from the skills and strengths that you already have, to enable you to make the choices in what you want to do to move forward.  It is common that people will say to me that they find it helpful to talk to someone who is not connected to the situation and who will actually listen and not tell them what to do.

I aim  to provide a comfortable, non-judgemental and safe environment for you to explore issues that you are finding difficult. I will help you to  explore your thoughts and feelings in a respectful and caring way. In this way we can work together to observe and reflect where you may have developed unconscious patterns and ways of being that were helpful in the past but may no longer be helpful now, or to give you the support that you need to help you to get through a distressing or difficult situation that you are experiencing now.

Many issues can be resolved in short-term work, whilst others may require a longer-term counselling/psychotherapy. If you decide that counselling is not the right option for you, I am happy to suggest organisations that may be more appropriate. I currently work in Primary Healthcare, counselling in surgeries in Peterborough. I am an active member and Branch Administrator for Rota and Records for the Cambridgeshire Consultancy in Counselling. I am also a member of the International Integrative Psychotherapy Association.
